Sony Computer Entertainment has rolled out its Life with PlayStation application for PS3 globally.

The interactive information service, which has suffered a number of delays and was even mistakenly launched early and then pulled, “offers users a new visual and interactive way to use their PS3 to access news and information from around the world”, according to the official press release.

The service, which requires users to be connected to the internet, can be accessed by clicking the Folding@home icon on the PS3’s XMB. Through the new Live channel users will receive news and information centering on two themes, place and time, on a world map interface, with cloud imagery provided by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center, weather information from The Weather Channel, news updates via Google News and live camera images supplied by The Earth Television Network.

Sony said that these initial offerings will be expanded upon at a later date.
