During the annual publisher and retailer event Destination PlayStation in Scottsdale, Ariz., Sony unveiled an array of new products aimed at bolstering its hardware and software offerings.
The company on Tuesday confirmed the rumored PSP version of LittleBigPlanet, a spin-off of the acclaimed 2008 user-gen-centric PS3 exclusive. The game, due this year, is developed "in conjunction with" Media Molecule, the U.K.-based developer behind the home console version.
Sony Computer Entertainment America's 2009 first-party PSP lineup also includes MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, developed by Pursuit Force developers BigBig Studios. The game is also due on PS2 in autumn.
In an agreement with MTV Games and Harmonix, the PSP will also become the exclusive home to Rock Band: Unplugged, the franchise's handheld debut. The game will utilize the PSP's wi-fi connection and will be the first PSP game to include a "fully-featured in-game store for downloadable content in the North American and Europeans markets."
EA's next Madden game for PSP will feature PS3-to-PSP connectivity. Gamers will be able to build their own formations and plays "from scratch" on the PSP, then download them to PS3. Also confirmed is a new Tiger Woods for PSP.
The PlayStation house also confirmed that Dissidia: Final Fantasy is coming to North America this summer. The game has sold 850K units in Japan since its pre-holiday launch in the region.
Sony announced that Ubisoft's blockbuster Assassin's Creed franchise is coming to PSP later this year in an "exclusive installment." A $199 Assanssin's Creed PSP Entertainment Pack with a "Piano Black" PSP will come to retail.
In order to attract a different kind of audience to the PSP, Sony is also releasing the $199 Hannah Montana PSP Entertainment Pack in July. It will include a new "Lilac" PSP system, a Hannah Montana game, a UMD with episodes of the Hannah Montana TV series, a 2GB memory stick and stickers (for decorating that Lilac PSP).
Also aimed at the younger crowd are new PSP versions of Ubisoft's pet-raising Petz line, also due this year.
News of new PSP support comes after Sony announced that the handheld has sold-in 50 million hardware units worldwide.
PS3 and Home
Launching this week is the "Warhawk Command Center," a space in the online PlayStation Home community where fans of the multiplayer online game Warhawk can gather.
At the Destination PlayStation event, the company also previewed Killzone 2, inFamous, MLB '09: The Show, MAG, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and God of War III, all of which are due this fiscal year.
My goodness, could it possibly be so? Games....decent sounding ones...available for the PSP...after how many years after the PSP was released...? Yay!
Home on the PS3? Still waiting for someone to tell me the point of this....why gather in a virtual world to talk about games...why not use precious time we have to play them? Nearly every game with online functionality comes with some form of built in lobby to find users with similar levels of experience and gaming desires.....why bother booting up Home...waiting for updates to download....etc....etc....etc....(and don't even mention the idea of spending my hard earned cash on virtual trousers and coffee tables) - answers on a postcard please...
a little bit of little big ps3/psp connectivity and I'm sold. Will p-p-pick up a psp this year by the looks of it
Makes sense to continue leveraging IP's from the PS3 (and PS2) towards the PSP. Some of the better PSP games have come from that philosophy (GoW, Daxter, R&C, Syphon Filter).
I'm looking forward to Resistance Retribution, and maybe MotorStorm (although I really suck at the PS3 version). Too bad there's not a PSP release for the Uncharted franchise. Now if they can just entice third parties back onto the platform. They should really make a stronger effort to have more of the PSN games available and adapted to PSP (Bejeweled, PixelJunk series, etc.).
Meh. Better news would have been a release date for the psp-4000 and news on the psp2 second analog stick and touchscreen.
So better news than a bunch of games would be yet another hardware revision?
Only 1 game that has any interest to me, so yes, better news than a bunch of games with no appeal to me. A hardware revision that fixed the screen interlacing issue and news that Sony gets the need for a second analog nub and a touchscreen would be much, much better news to me.
Leaving aside that either of those things would only be possible for a new console, I'd seriously question there being a need for a touchscreen.
And your personal interests aside, that Sony is showing such continued support for it's handheld can only be a good thing surely?
I want to hear/see more on this MAG game. Other than the PR driven generic name (that I'm almost positive will be changed), and the amount of players said name alludes to, not a whole lot else has been reported on this game. More players doesn't automatically mean better/good. The game would obviously have to be cut into segments during multiplayer matches since 100 players on one side shooting at 100 players on the other may get just a tad hectic. I'm more interested in an MMO style FP game honestly.
