As part of a “new initiative in its effort to revive its classic and beloved franchises,” publisher LucasArts has announced the imminent release of several classic games via online delivery platform Steam.
Available on July 8, a day after the debut of Telltale’s Tales Of Monkey Island series, the line-up is not limited to the point-and-click SCUMM adventure games, though some of those are present.
“This effort is going to make it possible to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to LucasArts’ classic games,” said company president Darrell Rodriguez. “It also gives more people a chance to play our games by making them available long after they’ve disappeared from store shelves. We hope our fans are as excited as we are about our plans and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next. This is just the beginning.”
Having teased with suggestions of an “old school” announcement over the weekend, the company’s Twitter feed gave further details. The heavily updated The Secret Of Monkey Island: Special Edition will arrive on July 15 for both Steam and Xbox Live Arcade, while “the team here have worked on the old games to make them work in XP/Vista [with] very low system requirements.”
The games confirmed for July 8 release are:
Armed And Dangerous
Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis
Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
Loom
Star Wars Battlefront II
Star Wars Republic Commando
Star Wars Starfighter
The Dig
Thrillville: Off The Rails
With further announcements on the way, there’s every likelihood that the rest of LucasArts’ portfolio – the best of it, at least – will arrive sooner rather than later.
I can whole heartedly say I do not give a !@#$ about any of those. How hard is it for them to just put out Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango and Full Throttle? Geesus.
Riddick: Butcher Bay was remade in Dark Athena.
Ninja Gaiden was remade as Sigma on PS3.
Armed and Dangerous coming to Steam.
Every other good Xbox exclusive I can think of is also on PC.
This is one less reason for me to get an original Xbox. Now I think the only game I want(ed) on it that hasn't been ported or remade is Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. Looks like there's one system I'll never need to get in post.
Or... Monkey Island / Indy / Grim in third/first person. Everyone agrees this is the way shooters/rpg's are evolving (see much of recent Edge output).
Current tech can cope with this : Bioshock / Gears/ Fallout are going to end up more influential than we thought. *-Hulks out, blinks and departs the forum-*
If they promote Day of the Tentacle (with built in Maniac Mansion) I will be a delighted headgeek. A funny clever adventure with time travel accurately represented. *lovely*
.
Hmm...well, it's nice, nut I dont't exactly get it. If I want to play Armed & Dangerous I just play my Xbox-version and laugh my ass off. If I wanted to play Fate of Atlantis, I would probably go and buy me a CD-version of it.
The most interesting part of this is how many of these titles are coming to XBLA or the Wii. I would just love to play the old adventures on the Wii and the platform would be perfect. While I can imagine to play Monkey Island on the 360 as well, with the pad it won't be the absolutely best solution for this game. Grim Fandango, I'm in, but point & click, I don't know.
Well, overall it's nice Lucas is taking care of their back catalogue, but I just imagine EA stating something like that and everybody would just scratch their heads and talk of getting the last dollar out of their games...

This is for PC gamers, your statements don't make much sense?
Fuck...this is the best news all year. E3 2009 doesn't have a look-in.
That Singaporean company used to make games?
