2K Games has picked up the rights to Marvel Comics’ iconic motorcycle riding superhero, Ghost Rider.

The third-person action game will be based on both the comic book series as well as upcoming Columbia Pictures/Marvel Studios’ movie, due for release early 2007. U.K.-based Climax Group is handling development for both console and handheld platforms.

The movie follows stunt rider Johnny Blaze as he strikes a deal for his soul with the evil Mephistopheles. The game will feature the series’ best-known characters as well as expanding the storyline beyond that of the movie. “Ghost Rider is one of Marvel Comics’ most successful comic book franchises and we’re thrilled to bring this beloved series to a broader audience,” said Christoph Hartmann, managing director of 2K Games. “The game will build upon elements from the franchise and intertwine its action with original content.”

The breadth of the Dungeon Siege universe is also about to be expanded in the form of two new products due for release this year. The first, Dungeon Siege II: Broken World, is an expansion pack to last year’s Dungeon Siege II, and will see the destruction of the Dark Wizard and thus the conclusion to the storyline started in the original game. This expansion takes place in a postapocalyptic setting, with new enemies and effects adding to a significantly darker atmosphere.
Taking the franchise in a new direction to a new audience, 2K has announced Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony, which will be the first Dungeon Siege title on the PSP. The handheld version will feature all the classic elements of the franchise along with co-op and competitive wireless multiplayer. Both new games will see release before the end of this year.
