According to hardware sales data from Media Create, the Xbox 360 didn't manage to outsell Nintendo's Wii during the week ended September 14, as earlier reported by Famitsu.
While Famitsu pegged Xbox 360 sales at 28,681 units, 1,600 ahead of the Wii for the week, Media Create reckons it was the other way round, although still a close run race.
Media Create data sees the Wii leading the battle of the home consoles with 29,686 units sold, followed by Xbox 360 with 28,188, PS3 with 8,053 and PS2 with 7,669.
According to the firm, handhelds continued to lead overall hardware sales, the DS way out in front having shifted 63,859 units, no doubt boosted by the release of the chart-topping Pokemon Platinum, while the PSP narrowly managed to outsell the leading home consoles.
DS - 63,859
PSP - 30,156
Wii - 29,686
360 - 28,188
PS3 - 8,053
PS2 - 7,669

You PS3 Fanboys need to get a grip, MGS is one game on a system with many great titles, it is not the sum of all things Playstation, if it is the magnum opus you're all claiming it is then it would still be riding high in the charts. Some people love it and some really don't, the Edge review was a fair assessment of this. By banging on about it as if it's the only good exclusive on the PS3 you are making your beloved system look bad.
^ this.
So talk about WipEout HD too.
It's too early right now, but in a year, talk about God of War III
After that... the next Shadow of the Colossus / ICO game.
Once that gets released... I'll be looking for a PS2 BC PS3 that can smooth and upscale my PS2 games and allow me to use wireless pads... and it'll be damn near impossible to get one.
/waits...
Well, you're right: MGS4 is "one game on a system with many great titles, it is not the sum of all things Playstation". Moreover, it's definitely not "the only good exclusive on the PS3". The system has many (as the 360 to be honest).
However, you just confuse sales with quality.
I didn't say it wasn't a quality game, just that it's not to my, or from the sales figures a great many other peoples tastes. So tell me, in what way am i confused? It's just getting a little old that you PS3 fans keep banging on about it as if it's the only decent game on the system. Some people don't like it, try and get a grip on that fact.
Nolim, just wanted to point out that your logic is flawed, no biggie. It's not about fanboyism or even MGS.
It's about you confuse the "magnum opus" concept of one system (or game) with "riding high in the charts" -- which are two different things imho. A game can be canon without being a sales hit. Even if MGS4 did quite well in both areas.
Although i thought i'd been pretty clear in my point, perhaps i'm wrong, so i'll put this as simply as possible. Check out all the recent posts where the subject could possibly be raised, particularly on any 360 articles for some weird reason, and you'll see that every time some PS3 fanboy starts waving the MGS flag. All i'm saying is that there must be something else worth bragging about on the PS3, so please, give MGS a rest, you don't get 360 owners droning on about Halo or Gears or Mass Effect or Bioshock on every post, even when the article is about the Xbox.
Fair enough.
Metal gear sold really well and was not a dissapointment at all you better get you infomation right if your going to post crap like this. You really do not know much about any thing about these kind of things do you? I would say not !
Depends on your definition of "selling really well." According to the NPD report for July, it was already off the top 10 in the US, 1 month after it's release. They also predicted it wouldn't make the yearly top 10. For me, a title that was marketed and talked about that much, to be out of the top 10 only 1 month later, I wouldn't call that selling well. I would call that a disappointment, for the US anyways, which is the biggest market overall..

Globally, i think the story was pretty similar, but would have to look at the old software sales charts from a few months back to be sure..
The xbox 360 was never out in japan so do not even use that to say it could not sell as good as the Wii because it was not in stock. Every video game websit and magazine has told every one that the xbox 360 have been sitting in stores for months and no one in japan wants them!
According to Microsoft, they said it was sold out. Whether you believe them or not is completely up to you.
And clearly not EVERY video game website said Xbox 360s have been sitting in stores for months because, well, this very site reported it being sold out:
http://www.edge-online.com/news/xbox-360-completely-sold-out-japan
BOTTOM LINE:
Xbox 360 and Wii sold on a 1:1 ratio, regardless of which system "outsold" the other by such a small number of units.
Xbox 360 had a fantastic September week now that Japanese systems are in stock again, just like it did during the first two weeks of August when Xbox 360 systems were in stock.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is a game that had only ONE month of impressive sales. MGS4 literally dropped from #1 in the month of June 2008 all the way down to #34 in July.
People realized that MGS4 was a game that they didn't like, and that it was a game that received very unfair review scores due to the contracts that Konami forced website and magazines to sign.
For example, one of the thing people dislike most about Metal Gear Solid 4 are the long loading "installs" that happen throughout the game. People don't like waiting randomly for 5 minutes, 4 muntes, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 1 minute, ect...
This is something that should have had an impact on the review scores of MGS4, and Konami knew that. As a result, Konami told the reviewers of the game that they would need to sign a legal contract saying that the "installs" could not be considered as a part of the review that could lead to a negative influence on the games overall score. If reviewers did not agree to that, Konami would not give the reviewers a review copy of the game.
This is the reason why Metal Gear Solid 4 received such "Mixed Reviews" from people who reviewed the game prior to its release with the "review copy" of the game from Konami, and the other sources who didn't agree to Konami's terms and waited to buy the game at the store in order to fairly review the game.
Just as Metal Gear Solid 4 software only sold well for one month, Metal Gear Solid 4 only had an impact on PS3 hardware sales for one month. Overall, Metal Gear Solid 4 sales were considered a disappointment for both Konami and Sony.
Spin doctoring used to work a bit five years ago, when the world at large was still in the process of learning the Internet and all. Now that people caught up, it's just annoying. Like getting piles of unsolicited mail in your mailbox if you will. Or Nigerian scam letters. Like bible salesmen knocking on your door every five minutes. Like commercials in Seinfeld. Like rain on a football day. You're ruining the fun. Because what you're doing is so obvious that one can only take it as a personal insult to one's intelligence.
Viral marketing, if done cleverly, for, through, among and with the community, can be very effective. I know that from first-hand experience. But this type of robotism is just pissing everybody off so much that it's ending up getting contra-productive. As hard to believe as it may be for you, paid intern or die-hard fangirl at home, it doesn't matter, you're damaging the brand you're trying to push. Every time we read the word Xbox 360 in your abusive bad-faithed stubborn comments, we actually want to purchase it less. It's off-putting, in one word.
At least, show some respect, try to sound genuine... Make an effort, come on, say things that sound "slightly" reasonable for a change! If you're really paid to do this stupid job, try to do it a bit better at least. Less insults and sarcasms in your face on forums = more sales and revenue for Microsoft's pockets in the marketplace. Get it?
Should we flag him as "offensive"? Dear staff, we really need a button here for spammers.
"Kim" your comments are insulting for us and for EDGE actually (formerly next-gen.biz). I mean seriously, we don't need your copypasted "marketing for dummies" monologues. We have some tongue in cheek "fanboys" here but at least we're talking to each other. Oh and your so-called facts are flawed to say the least.
The bottom line? You redefine "biased" in your every word. Just GTFO really.
I don't think it'd be a bad idea to flag kim as offensive considering how we all seem to feel the same way about him. I don't know if stat twisting or extreme bias can be considered offensive, but if we all are bothered by his antics, then that should be all that matters? I mean, he doesn't even stick around to defend his posts...EVER. Any way...
As far as Metal Gear, its not always about critical acceptance. Metal Gear was in a way supposed to be PS3's system seller, their "Halo" so-to-speak, their ace in the hole. Metal Gear was well reviewed, sold well initially, and pushed systems for about a month. Just for sake of comparison when looking at pushing sales, look at Halo 3's launch and holiday sales and console sales during those months, it appears as though it had a large impact on the 360's impressive sales after Halo 3's September launch. The PS3 had a relatively moderate but impressive increase in console sales of about 200k for that month. Impressive, yes, ace in the hole system mover??? Not as much as they would have liked. (also note that the game was bundled with the 80 gig PS3s) And I think that is where the dissapointment lies, not in the quality of the game.
You're probably right about Kim.
About MGS4's "disappointment", 3.24M copies in 3 months is pretty good in my book. Especially for a niche title on an expensive platform with 5.3M lesser userbase than Halo's. Of course it's not a Halo3 or WoW kinda success but it's not a disappointment, not a bit.
I think we can agree 3.2 million copies in just a few months is great no matter what the case. I was specifically referring to MGS's ability to move PS3's. That was Sony's flagship title, their "reason to buy a PS3" for those people who were still waiting for a reason to buy a PS3. But I think you nailed it on the head when you said,
"Especially for a niche title on an expensive platform with 5.3M lesser userbase than Halo's."
I had a discussion with someone whether or not MGS was niche or mainstream. I think the numbers show that although it helped push 200k+ systems for that month (in the US, don't know about other territories), I think it'd be safe to say that most people who bought MGS4 already owned a PS3. If it wasn't niche, maybe it would have moved more PS3s...but then again...GTAIV completely failed to move systems on both platforms and I don't think a game can get any more mainstream than GTA, so who knows. But I think Sony may have been dissapointed that MGS4 didn't move as many systems as they had hoped, but I'm sure Konami was happy with the sales of the game itself.
BOTTOM LINE? You've blown your cover Kim or should I say DarkFalz! Banned from every forum on the internet (even Team-XBOX) for being under the employ of Microsoft and conducting a viral marketing campaign. Are Microsoft that desperate to manipulate opinion that they'd engage in such trite tactics? Wait what am I saying? Of course they are!
Anyway, metatcritic puts the game at 94% (from an average of 77 reviews), the lowest score it got was 80%. The user score is at 9.0 based on 1404 votes, hardly a game people didn't like. Gears of War got 94% from the reviewers and a user score of 8.3. Halo 3 got 94% as well with the lowest review showing 70%, it's user score was 7.4. I'd say if anything Metal Gear Solid 4 is as well as received by the critics as Halo 3 and Gears of War and is considered to be superior to those games by the people that matter, the gamers. Stick that in your computer and spin it.

You guys can keep your MGS4 we don't want it. ;)
Yes we know. It hurts so much. ;)
Based on it's time in the software sales charts, not many other people wanted it either. Don't feel bad.
Ooh, burn!!!
Never really got what all the fuss was about with Metal Gear, just seemed like a poor Splinter Cell (yes i know MGS was out before SC) with waaaaay too many, waaay too long cut scenes. Haven't played the latest one so I hope it's better, but i doubt it.
If you really want a good stealth game then pick up a copy of Thief 2 and play some of the hundreds of free levels on http://www.thief-thecircle.com, eight or nine years old and still easily the best game in it's genre.
Do yourself a favour and play at least the first two Metal Gear Solids, they're available for the PC too. As someone who played both series in and out, SC just can't hold a candle to MGS, period.
About the Thief series, http://www.thief-thecircle.com/ is great and I check http://www.ttlg.com/ every day for nostalgy's sake (and for the community). However, T2 (and Thief: TDP) is a different genre and league, you can't compare it to Metal Gear. You play Thief for the atmosphere and for the thrills, and you play MGS for the story and for a wholly unique experience (whatever that means :)).
I actually played and loved the first Metal Gear. I actually posted about it in a thread referring to game's "wow" moments. That game is in my top 5 of my favorite games. Well, one thing I was fine with was the cumbersome control. Having to scroll through so many menus to use items, change weapons, etc didn't really bother me. But by the time I played metal gear 2, I had played other games where the controlls were simple and intuitive and I didn't have the patience for MGS2's dated controls. I never played a Metal Gear after that.
I think splinter cell and MGS although both stealth games, are quite different. I never played MGS2-4, but as far as MGS1 comparison, they were quite different. I think which one between the two is better is purely up to personal preference. I think a lot of people think the SC series is better, so who knows. I never played thief, don't know anything about that game.
I think, while the two are very different, they are still comparable. You make a good point about atmosphere and for me that's one of the areas where MGS lets itself down, you should be able to tell a decent story without the need to continually interrupt game play with tedious cut scenes, all immersion was lost as soon as the next 15 minute contrived conversation started. I really wanted to like MGS but it's need to drive the story down your throat every time you might be starting to enjoy yourself just ruined it. I'd never argue that a games storyline wasn't important, it's one of the key elements to greatness, that scene where Constantine reveals his true nature in TDP is an all time classic, but that story needs to complement game play, not be thrown at you every 10 minutes like a brick to the head.
I agree to an extend but also feel that SC took itself a little too serious at times while MGS always had a nice balance between its rather serious story and funny gameplay elements. The last one did have a few cut scenes that were a bit... long - but it was a great story regardless. I'm curious to see what will happen with a new SC though... but I guess that might not be out any time soon.
Hmmm, Microsoft releasing their own NPD numbers, Famitsu subbing for Media Create... I see a pattern here...
Consider this comment my own "press release" stating that last week Merlin the Electronic Wizard outsold the DS and the PSP combined in Gary, Indiana.
You'll run this as a news story, right? Oh wait, it's not pro-Xbox. NEVER MIND.
Hello Kim? Kim? Where are you Kim?
Or rather, to be more cruel, in Col. Roy Campbell's voice:
"Kim, answer me. Kim! Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim!"
Or as Otagon seeing as MS'll never get (the frankly underscored by edge) MGS 4 on 360.
