Released on Thursday exclusively for PS3, MGS4 took the top spot from last week’s bestseller, Lego Indiana Jones, which suffered a nine percent drop in weekly sales. MGS4 sales topped opening week MGS3 sales by 24,000 units, but fell 14,000 units short of MGS2’s first week sales total.
While MGS4 sold 2,000 units more than Gran Turismo 5 Prologue managed in its opening week, it failed to beat the record set by Grand Theft Auto IV, which slipped a place to third during the week ended June 14.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was a non-mover at No4, while the Father’s Day Dr. Kawashima DS Lite hardware bundle helped Brain Training jump from No12 to No5. Brain Training has now spent 74 weeks in the All Formats Top 10 since its release two years ago (Tomb Raider currently holds the record of 79 weeks).
Konami’s Wii-exclusive Sports Island was up from No14 to No8, Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution from Take-Two debuted at No9, while Wii Fit re-entered the Top 40 at No10 thanks to renewed stock.
The only other All Formats Top 40 new entry was Take-Two’s Don King Presents: Prizefighter at No25.
