Xbox Live's director of programming, Larry Hryb, has clarified comments made by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer concerning Xbox 360 and Blu-ray.
Asked recently whether Microsoft has plans for an Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive, Ballmer said: “Well I don't know that we need to put Blu-ray in there - you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives, you can get Blu-ray drives as accessories.”
According to Hryb, Ballmer was "referring to Blu-ray accessories for the PC”, and Microsoft has “no plans” to introduce a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360.
“In fact,” he added, “the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.”
Physical copies are so 20th century.
With BT and other ISP's in the UK throttling streaming speeds for people just using the SD iPlayer imagine what they'll do to someone trying to stream a 1080p HD movie over the same internet connection. I see the word "buffering" in people's future...
Sometimes its just nice to own the physical product as well.
I won't own a physical copy that I lend my friends though or be able to watch on a variety of different bits of hardware so I think ms are cutting their noses off to spite their face.
Seriously, the value proposition of "instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies" sucks. But you know what they say about fools and their money.
I would be quite happy with a subscription based service, similar to that of Lovefilm or blockbusters postal rental service in price. Perhaps limited to one film a day at a base rental price of £15 a month with further options such as 2 films a day for £20 etc etc.
Personally im not interested in owning DVD/Blu rays anymore, i had about 400 dvds which just took up space in my room
