Microsoft increases Indie Game size limits

Microsoft has announced several changes to file size limits on the Xbox Live Indie Games service.

The maximum size of games on the service is now 500MB, up from the previous 150MB. Developers can now charge 80 Microsoft Points for games of up to 150MB in size; previously, games over 50MB had to be priced at 240 or 400 MSP.

The latter change means users can expect to see the price of games on the service come down; Zeboyd Games' Cthulhu Saves The World has already been reduced to 80 MSP. Developers are now able to release 20 games on the service, up from the previous limit of ten.

In a post on the XNA Game Studio Team blog, Microsoft says the changes "make it a good time to be an Xbox Live Indie Games developer," and adds: "We're continuing to watch our developer base and adapt the system to the needs of our creators.

"We hope you're all excited as we are to kick off 2012 with these great updates to the App Hub to enable our developers to make even better content for Xbox Live Indie Games."

The news shows that Microsoft hasn't quite given up on XBLIG entirely. Unfortunately there's been no improvement to the placement of Indie Games on the Xbox 360 dashboard following last month's Metro update, which one developer described as "confusing and scary."

Some good changes there, but would still help if they were made easier to find.
