[Update: Microsoft has "no plans to acquire EA"]
Electronic Arts shares rose by more than eight per cent today on unsubstantiated talk that Microsoft is interested in acquiring the Madden publisher.
"There's talk that Microsoft might be interested in acquiring Electronic Arts. It's unsubstantiated chatter, but it's out there," Frederic Ruffy, an options strategist at WhatsTrading.com in New York, told Reuters.
A London-based trader is also said to have cited similar talk doing the rounds in Europe.
Despite the chatter, Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry said that EA was not on Microsoft's "radar screen" according to his industry contacts.
And Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz said in a note that the likelihood of Microsoft acquiring EA “is inconsequentially low”.
“EA derives over 30 per cent of its revenue from the Sony PS2 and PS3 and Nintendo Wii platforms, which would almost certainly disappear in the event of a Microsoft acquisition, since presumably the point of the acquisition would be to secure EA.s products as Xbox 360 platform exclusives,” he wrote. “EA derives another 10 per cent of revenue from the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS, which would conceivably also be at risk in the event of a Microsoft acquisition.
“In our view there is simply no way that Microsoft could make the math work due to the massive hit to EA’s revenue and earnings post-acquisition. This is even assuming such a deal would pass regulatory muster, which we find highly doubtful.”
EA has a market value of $6.5 billion and is frequently named by traders as a target for Walt Disney and Time Warner.
A Microsoft spokesperson has now told MarketWatch: "We have no plans to acquire EA."
Rumors that a major media company is planning to make a bid for UFC and Saints Row publisher THQ saw the firm's shares jump 13 per cent on Tuesday.
Microsoft have just officially denied this.
If the PS2, PS3, Wii, PSP, and DS only make up a bit over 40% of their revenue... how much is the 360 here? There's just PC and phones after that. 0_o
Most likey thing to happen if MS was a buy EA (unlikey MS closed studios remember) would be timed exclusive or full, on none sports titles. And full support for PS2, PSP & DS.
It's bollocks to be honest. MS couldn't afford to buy EA even if they wanted to.
MS have got money, but not that much money...
Microsoft is worth over $225B, EA is a bit over $6B. If MS can afford Yahoo! they can afford EA. MS wouldn't even overextend their cash RESERVES to buy EA (not that they would use those funds as this would be a stock swap). I don't think this is serious either, but MS could EASILY buy EA if they were so inclined.
This really doesn't sound possible. Could it even get approved without some concession regarding the NFL license?
