Microsoft: no new Xbox at E3

Microsoft has poured cold water on reports that it is to unveil the Xbox 360 successor at E3 in June.

Speaking to Le Point, reported by Develop, Microsoft France marketing director Cedrick Delmax said: "I am not convinced things will happen this year. Xbox 360's cycle is not at all finished. The proof is that we don't see the logic in cutting the price this year.

"E3 is still premature. What's certain is that there'll be nothing new in 2012."

All of which is a fairly unequivocal denial of reports from insiders that the company was set to debut its new console at E3. Last year sources told us that the company had delivered 'target boxes' based on the intended final specs of the console to several major studios, with a view to an E3 unveiling; earlier this month sources told MCV that both Microsoft and Sony would be revealing new consoles as the annual trade show in June.

Damn. I was really hoping to see the 720 announced at this year’s E3. I’ve owned the 360 since 2005 and have steadily seen it decline from a hardcore gaming platform into a Wii-like box for casuals. I have nothing against Kinect, I just wish Microsoft would take care of his core user base as well. Instead they have shifted all their resources into creating what basically amounts to shovelware. Why can’t they invest some of the money they make from Kinect, 360 sales, LIVE, peripherals, and games into some new Core IP? Simples: There is no money in it. The people that would buy those new Core IP’s have already brought a 360 and are already buying multiformats to which Microsoft get a cut. If not for Xbox LIVE I would even own a 360 anymore. I play most of my single player games on PS3 anyway. Ah Sony – there’s a company that likes to take care of his costumers. How many first party games did they release last year? How many are due this year?

How many first party games did Sony release last year?
Well according to wikipedia, 4...

God of War Origins Collection - remastered PSP games
Ape Escape - Move-based on-rails shooter
White Knight Chronicles II - a decent RPG!
DC Universe Online - an online RPG.

So, 2 really, by your high standards. Well done there Sony; clearly you have a fan in Shenmue.

Microsoft on the other hand published 3 exclusive titles: Forza 4, Gears of War, and Halo Anniversary. Granted they aren't listed as "developers" for anything though.

You sound to be making a lot of noise over nothing. There are plenty of games for the 360 that have nothing to do with Kinect or are in no way pushing away core gamers. Likewise with PS3. Though really? Did you just say Sony likes to take care of their customers? Perhaps you missed the fiascos around removing PS2 compatibility, removing the option to install other OSes, letting your account details into the hands of ne'er-do-wells...

How is this news? It would have been unbelievably daft to unveil anything resembling a next-gen console when 360's and Kinects are still selling so well. My bet is CES 2013 at the earliest.

Come on Nathan, the translation isn't really accurate is it? Delmax is saying that he doesn't think there will be new hardware released this year. In no way does this mean that Microsoft will not announce their new console at E3.
