Over 25 game developers will receive funds designed to develop online gaming in the region, Korea Creative Content Agency says.

The investment is part of a £38 million (US$60 million) overall package disclosed by CEO Steve Ballmer in May. It will be spent over four years in a programme that includes Microsoft training software engineers, providing marketing and technical support and establishing new business enterprises.

Online gaming is extremely popular in South Korea, success that has driven the gaming industry to define new game forms and business models, such as free-to-play and micro-transaction-based, that only begun to filter through to the western market comparatively recently.

The pledge, therefore, can be seen in part as an attempt by Microsoft to ensure that its technology is a significant part of ongoing development in the field.
