Microsoft Raises Xbox Live Subscription Prices

Microsoft is to raise the price of Xbox Live Gold subscription prices in the US, UK Canada and Mexico for the first time since the online service launched in 2002.

Effective November 1, 2010, the price for a monthly US subscription will increase from $7.99 to $9.99, the cost of a three month sub from $19.99 to $24.99, and the price of an annual sub from $49.99 to $59.99.

In the UK and Canada the monthly sub offerings will rise, from £4.99 and $8.99 to £5.99 and $9.99 respectively, while in Mexico the cost of an annual Gold sub will jump from 499 Pesos to 599 Pesos.

“Since launching Xbox Live in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same,” Larry Hryb, director of programming for Xbox Live, said on his blog. “We’re confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox Live Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.

“However, we do want to thank our loyal members and give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount, so now would be a good time to renew your subscription.”

Xbox Live is currently available in over 25 countries and has more than 25 million members, with around half paying for an annual Gold subscription, generating roughly $600 million a year in revenue. Xbox Live revenues cleared $1 billion for the first time in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010.

In June Microsoft detailed a new Xbox Live family subscription option that will offer four XBL Gold memberships for $99.99.
