In an official statement released in response to the NPD Group's US industry sales results for August 2009, Microsoft has said that the Xbox 360 remains the only console to show year-to-date growth in North America.

The Xbox 360 sold 215,000 units in the US during August, and system sales are up nearly 17 percent year-to-date. “Driving demand are budget-conscious consumers understanding that Xbox 360 delivers more entertainment value per dollar than any other console,” Microsoft said, adding that the recent price reduction of the Xbox 360 Elite model to $299 generated first week sales “surpassing our expectations.”

Introduced on August 28, the Xbox 360 price reduction also drove a 43 per cent sales boost in the UK in the week it took effect, and a further 29 per cent week-on-week sales increase over the following seven days.

Microsoft’s US arm also noted that third party sales on the Xbox 360 hit $130.4 million during August, with Madden NFL 10 topping the software chart and Batman: Arkham Asylum placing fourth. “Xbox 360 has maintained the streak of leading third-party sales for every month of 2009,” it said.

The platform holder’s Summer of Arcade campaign - which featured the digital releases of Shadow Complex, Trials HD, TMNT: Turtles In Time Reshelled, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and ‘Splosion Man via Xbox Live Arcade - saw sales more than double from last year’s campaign, the company said.

Echoing similar comments from Sony, Microsoft also said that upcoming platform exclusive releases bode well for its console. “Xbox 360 is also home to some of the season’s most-anticipated blockbuster titles with a line-up of exclusives that includes Halo 3: ODST in September, Forza Motorsport 3 in October, and Left 4 Dead 2 this November.”

it's cool when sony or nintendo does this with super mario or god of war but microsoft the "evil"company does everything for money...ok sure.anyway i'm not a fanboy(i have and enjoy all systems)but older gamers must remember how sony got into videogaming..oh i blew it this is a reply to halo franchise comments

Sony will still lose. It doesn't come with any pack-ins where as every 360 comes with a free red ring.

That is possibly the least witty comment i have ever read.

Poor Microsoft, so desperate for a positive spin on what must be for them increasingly distressing news: Nintendo continuing to decimate them month after month having turned a profit on every single sale, PS3 selling better than 360 was at this point in its lifecycle, oh and that nagging little 54.2% failure rate.

Better luck next generation, hacks! Assuming, that is, that your shareholders continue to sit idly by while you flush a few more billion dollars down the Xbox toilet.

I bought an Arcade unit to replace my fifth (fourth refurb) Pro because A) it was a few months past the three year extended warranty, and B) because I really didn't feel like waiting another month for another shoddy refurb. When you've invested hundreds or thousands of dollars in content for a console, it's fairly easy to justify a replacement system, especially when you can get an Arcade and move your existing HDD over to it. I'd be curious to know what percentage of sales has gone to replacement systems rather than new systems; Microsoft knows when you transfer DRM rights, so they should have a pretty decent picture of those stats. Not that they'd ever be willing to release them...

That said, I'll be giving the next 'box a wide berth until the kinks are worked out. I'm not getting one on launch day next go-round. My PS3's been running fine for three years without a hitch, as have the Wii, two Xbox 1s, and a Dreamcast. Every other console I've ever owned was still working when I sold or gave them away. The 360 is the only console I've ever had die on me.

Oh goody, yet another Halo game. Yawn. Does anyone else think you can just play Halo 1 and you have pretty much played them all? Also, I wonder how many 360's sold this year were replacements for RROD casualties...

Reviewer: ODST is 'underwhelming'

Don't worry: this warmed-over expansion pack is not going to move any hardware for them. Well, other than to the 54.2% of players who get a RRoD whilst playing it, of course.

5 Halo games in 8 years is hardly excessive in this industry. Both Sony and Nintendo have numerous franchises which offer far more egrigious examples of retreading the same material. Fortunately for MS, Halo:ODST will only be outsold by Modern Warfare 2 this year.

The only people who would buy a 360 to replace a RROD unit would have to be as foolish as you are for making that comment, considering 360 comes with a free 3 year warranty. Since the Jasper redesign, 360 is within 1% of the failure rate of PS3 (both in the 10-11% range) - does that mean the PS3 Slim sales can be attributed to people replacing YLOD casualties??? Why is it so hard to accept that the reason 360 is handily outselling PS3 every year is because most consumers made the decision that it was the better system for them?

toadwarrior's picture

Retreading material is fine when you have a jump like Super Mario World to Super Mario 64 or even SM64 to SM Galaxy. The gaps between each Mario game or each Gran Turismo game is quite decent where as MS is trying to turn Halo into a sports title that gets a yearly release. Releasing that often will guarantee the series will suck quick.

Aside from the RTS, all the Halo games are effectively the same thing. To be fair it's not just Halo, most FPS shooters are looking pretty tired these days. When the original developer wants to get away from the series then there is a good chance the series has been milked too much.

Poffle's picture

Sorry, Toadwarrior. Are you saying Gran Turismo games are quite a bit different between each iteration? The only thing that changes are the graphics. Which is fine, it's a series, I don't want it to change too much. I want it to keep the same things that made me fall in love with the series initially. With regards to Halo, which i'm not actually that keen on though I will defend it. 4 games in like 9 years isn't turning it into an EA sports type title. 2 titles a year is turning it into a sports franchise. After Halo:Reach comes out we will see how much MS will milk the franchise. When Halo Kart comes out you can slag it off!

I will agree with you that FPS games are getting a little tired, but then there is only so much you can do with pointing and shooting. It's all about FPS/RPG games nowadays me thinks.

I mentioned replacements for RROD as I have met people who have done exactly that, usually because their units failed so much that they ended up having two 360's, one being a back up unit for when the other failed. Also, as the 360 is now nearly 4 years old even those three years are beginning to run out for the older units and replacements would have to be bought, thus adding to sales figures.
I take your point about Halo, its just that unlike COD you couldn't exactly say the Halo franchise has changed as dramatically. But I admit, 5 games in 8 isn't anywhere close to the EA franchises, I am just a bit bored by it tis all.
Oh, and for the record I don't have a PS3 or a 360 as both systems didn't seem the best system for me.

zerobob's picture

You don't own either system? I hardly think your in a great place to comment about the Halo games then.

Also if people are willing to buy a backup 360 does this not speak volumes about people making an overwhelming conscious decision that they would much prefer to own a 360?

I agree with you that these constant articles on increased sales are getting boring though. All that needs to be said is that Sony have released a new revision of their console hardware, which has inevitably caused a higher sales figures peak in a market where demand has tethered off for both consoles over the last few years, end of.

Duncan_Stewart's picture

Of course, owning neither system means that I have never played the games for hours on my friends Xbox and Xbox 360. I got more fun from Halo than Halo 3 as at the time it was a fresh take on the genre, and by 3 I was just kind of bored.
