Microsoft’s Illumiroom takes gaming beyond the borders of the TV screen

Microsoft IllumiRoom

The latest glimpse into the future of gaming at this week’s CES in Las Vegas comes courtesy of Microsoft’s IllumiRoom, which projects images and light into the room outside a TV screen.

Illumiroom uses Kinect and a projector to expand a game beyond the confines of the living room TV. Snow falls, fire skips across the floor, and environments fill the entire wall behind the big screen.

Interesting stuff, despite the presentation – we’d have been much more interested to see what it does with something other than an FPS (and a quick glimpse of a kart racer for the ladies). No price or release date were announced; more information will be revealed at the ACM CHI conference in Paris in April.
