Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto has said that a new console from the company would likely retain the motion-control functionality introduced with the Wii, but be “more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient".
"With both the Wii Remote itself and Wii Motion Plus, what we've been able to do is introduce an interface that is both I think appealing and at the right price for a broad audience,” the Mario creator told Popular Mechanics.
"And while we don't have any concrete plans for what we'll be doing with hardware in the future, what I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient."
Earlier this week in a discussion about high definition graphics, Miyamoto said that Nintendo's games would “move along in step with the progression of technology”, but the designer maintained that gameplay is still the company’s key focus.
Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter expects Nintendo to release a high definition Wii in 2010, while Square Enix president Yoichi Wada predicts the firm will launch a new Wii console by 2011.
I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient.
Doesn't sound like a leap in technology to me...
Nintendo have been responsible for an interface that has changed the way users interact with their games. The surprising popularity of the Wii has allowed Nintendo to shift focus from technological advances to gameplay. There is simply no need to develop a new console, when the one they have is selling at phenomenal rate! This allows them to focus on more immediate goals.
It was only natural that both of Nintendo's competitors would follow suit with their own incarnations of motion capture devices. From what we've seen of Microsoft's and Sony's own projects, they look very interesting, if not a little experimental at this stage.
In terms of application, will other projects have the same impact as Nintendo's? Will they bring anything new and innovative to gaming? Will they even have the same adoption rate as Wii technology? Although one may speculate, the answers to all these questions are unknown at this stage.
Whatever does happens with other projects may be intriguing, but let's not forgot that Sony and Microsoft are playing catch up and it's not clear whether they will see the benefit of having similar devices. With that in mind, I believe they'll always be playing second fiddle to Nintendo.
Whilst the other two squabble over 2nd and 3rd places and waste valuable resources on their own wildly unoriginal projects, the underdog has crept up on them and taken a huge chunk out the there collective behinds!
>>The surprising popularity of the Wii has allowed Nintendo to shift focus from technological advances to gameplay
I sorta feel the opposite, many games use the wiimote in ways that a d-pad could do fine.
But nintendo has always lead in controller design. They invented the d-pad with the NES and created a whole new world of 2D gaming, they invented the analog for the N64 and created a whole new world of 3D gaming, and now they created the wiimote that...
Well, its sorta like using a mouse that floats in the air.
I think Mad World's been the best use of the wiimote, as in the most fun I've had out of it. Shaking and spinning in high intensity situations, chopping to deliver a final blow
Yeah, the wiimote has innovated with another level of interactiveness.
Congrats, you get my dumbest post of the year award.
In my opinion Nintendo still make great games and great consoles. The Wii is a triumph - a true original and the wildcard in the pack. I hope they continue to innovate, and continue to bring us great games.
I totally agree.
I wish Nintendo would get out of the fucking tacky gimmick business and give us real games and a decent console to go with them.
I totally disagree.
Miyamoto in PR gob-shite shenanigans.
Man, I hate Miyamoto and Nintendo can s**k my balls. I'm glad to see the Wii bubble is bursting at last. Sales are down globally and so are their earnings forecasts. Let's see if they can pull a rabbit out of a hat again.
But dude, yo mama told me you aint got no balls, she told me this when she finished taking my teabag on her face and lips..
Dude, I think you typed that sh*t into the wrong website. No one here wants to know your jerk off fantasies about my balls. Also grow up; this is not play school. Well at least this proves all Nintendo fans aren't totally immature kiddies... oh wait!
But your statement is contradictory...By your Mom's own word, it is established that you are in fact carrying a empty scrotum, and as such incapable of inducing ball related fantasies even in the most ardent shirt lifting virgina-decliner (which i am not, i love slamming into what the ladies love to have filled!) so stop crying about your hate of all things Nintendo related and accept that the original dominant market leader in video game entertainment has regained its well earnt position as #1 again, and this time against much more tough competition. I mean JUST what is your grief with Miyamoto and Nintendo anyway? Are you one of those dudes who actually thought Sega stood a fighting chance against Nintendo? I only feel Sega deserved #1 with the Dreamcast over the Ps2 but only until the xbox was released...
If you saw an adult going out of his way to argue with children about videogames, what would you think of him
I agree, it sends out all the wrong signals in that a cheap as chips console and shovelware can gain loads of money.
Nintendo fans are pulling themselves off this gen because Wii is leading, but they fail to understand that all the Wii is doing is creating more harm than good.
Now we have Sony and MS jumping on the gimmick train with their stupid peripherals.
Your right about Sony and Microsoft "jumping on the bandwagon" but at least project Natal looks to be a Real threat! Sony's answer to Wii, quiet litteraly makes you look like a English Moronic Morris dancer! Complete with two sticks to act the fool with! By the way, my earlier responses dont have paragraphs because they are lenghty and i didnt want to hit a text limit having to type it all out again! just press Ctrl and + to increase the text size, it looks less daunting in larger text size!
There isn't a text limit?.. I don't think I've ever hit one :D
Nintendo are like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers...their old stuff was excellent, but their new stuff is just, well, plain shite!
I wouldnt mind if they were just honest about going after the casual pound, but all this talk of gameplay pisses me off.
If Nintendo are so concerned with gameplay then why dont we see more of their killer series like Zelda, F zero, Pilotwings etc etc, like the N64, oh yeah cos the N64 didnt sell any games
They'll probably just give the Wii a new lick of paint and stick a camera in the Wiimote or something similarly daft.
And 75 millions morons will fall for their tricks all over again.
Speaking as one of the 75 million morons you mentioned, I can't wait to play a Wii+ with 360/PS3 graphics. But what do I know? I'm not wise like you ; )
guess what, there IS a camera in the wiimote.
No there isn't a camera in the Wiimote. But there is a speaker.
Nintendo is always about 2 years behind the technology curve let's get real Nintendo.
They'll probably do what they've done with the DS. Release a new "upgraded" Wii alongside the current Wii. The current Wii would eventually die out just like the original DS did and the DS lite will now that the DSi is out. It's worked for their handhelds, why not their console?
>>Nintendo is always about 2 years behind the technology curve let's get real Nintendo.
Nintendo got Real when Reggie Fils-Aime, 6 years ago in E3 got on stage and introduced himself as "My name is Reggie. I'm about kickin' ass, I'm about takin' names, and we're about makin' games." and then proceeded to rape Sony and Microsoft up the bum with their wii.
>>The current Wii would eventually die out just like the original DS did and the DS lite will now that the DSi is out.
and amazingly, they play the same games.
Wow, that was a real fanboy rant.
U clearly dont know what your talking about. Nintendo have ALWAYS lead technologicaly with graphics and sound in their consoles, the only exception to this FACT is the Wii. NES was up against spectrum, comadore, atari 2600, amstrad,it wasnt untill Sega mastersystem came out after it 2 years later that it was betterd in that gen. Mega-drive(Genesis) was hot and then the SNES made it look obselete with a much bigger colour pallet and display, the audio was soo much better (CD quality, 41khz sampling rate)after playing street fighter 2 on Snes, it was unplayable on the megadrive cause it was just soo nasty incomparison. Only machine that gen that could out do it was the £400 Neo-Geo, at £200/300 a game. and the Snes had graphical effects even the neo was incapable of. N64 first home console to feature antialised graphics has a hardware feature. plus true 64 bit when that gen was all 32. Gamecube, with its game that shipped with the machine(Luigis Mansion) demonstrated visuals that the ps2 never betterd. With a chip set that was soposedly cheaper than Xbox, on several occasions shown that its texure maping ability was a class above xbox with the ability to display 8 textures on a single surface, 4 was the max for xbox. Consistently used character models with WAAY higher polygon counts than the xbox, xbox disguised its lower polygon models with shaders( the gamecube had a "type of shader" it was not the same tech, but used a differnt method to do same affects, it was called a TEV unit, but it was sorely underused) the only place xbox undoubtedly out performed cube was with its REAL TIME dolby digital 5.1 and that, ladys and gentlemen brings us to the Wii. A company first....Not bringing the fight graphicaly or sonicaly.
I'm not talking graphical capability. Other than lacking any internal storage medium, DD 5.1, much of any widescreen or 480p support, DVD playback, online component (other than one game), the GCN was right there with everyone else. All joking aside, I'm more specifically referring to things like online multiplyaer (still not quite there with the Wii, what am I kidding online multiplayer is still a joke on the Wii), voice support, online community, and now with the Wii is behind on all fronts graphic and audio capabilities included. Motion control was a novel approach and in some cases utilized in very intuitive ways but for the most part most Wii games can be controller just as easily if not better with a standard dual analog pad.
>>All joking aside, I'm more specifically referring to things like online multiplyaer (still not quite there with the Wii, what am I kidding online multiplayer is still a joke on the Wii), voice support, online community
Nintendo is more for inviting your friends over to play with you, not sitting alone muttering into a headset. That was never their goal.
Bumping into your friends when you tilt into your turn in Mario Kart, passing around the controller in intense rounds of Smash Bros, this is what Nintendo aimed for, and accomplished.
Street Fighter on the SNES's d-pad against your rivals(friends, siblings, etc.), plugging in the multitap to get a full 5 man game of bomberman on your birthday, watching Final Fantasy 6 unfold on a big couch with buddies. This is what Nintendo has always done.
They are also doing the same with the DS
Notice that in their advertisement, it's never a single person waggling a wiimote by themselves.
I see the analogy you're making here - the WIi is what keeps the 360 and the PS3 alive... I see, I see
I'm usually way annoyed at your little videos but this one is too funny. I even like the brief glimpse of the 360 running away, too.
I understand there is a certain nostalgic feel to playing multiplayer SNES-style on your couch with your buddies. I can't count how many hours I burned playing time trials on Super Mario Kart trying to beat my little ghost Toad to the finish line on Ghost Valley 1 or playing battle mode (and losing badly) with my older brother, player 4 player split-screen Goldeneye, and yes I was there with the multi-tap too with Bomberman and even Madden. I played Super SFII with a few of my friends for hours and hours on my SNES. I even watched my older brother for hours and hours playing Chrono Trigger and FFIII.
The problem is that was the ONLY option then and we were happy with that. But if you want more competition or want to play with more than 4 people, want to rank yourself with the rest of the world, not have to split your screen 4 ways, the convenience of being able to meet up with friends online who either may not live near you or have families they can't just up and leave when you want to throw down an hour of Street Figher or Halo split-screen just won't do.
I was there with the multi-tap just like you and for 6 years I've been playing on my couch with my buddies who just happened to be on their own couch and I can tell you chatting with your friends while playing games with them is just as fun. That's obviously my opinion and everyone will differ, but if you've never owned an xbox/360/PS3 you can't judge online multiplayer since you haven't experienced it fully. And playing two sessions of Halo online at your friend's house doesn't count as fully experiencing it.
It's also not just about playing games with them, frequently I'll be playing a single player game or even multiplayer game and be party chatting with people who aren't even playing with me. It's the whole community aspect of it, staying connected with your friends (many of my live friends who I'm also real life friends with live all over the country (and world in some cases).
Nintendo should realize that plenty of people (live is over 20 million subscribers and PSN is nearing that if I'm not mistaken) desire proper online gaming and the travesty that is the Wii online multiplayer shouldn't be swept under the rug for nostalgia. CoD4 has only 10 players on the Wii and no voice support. That is a sad sad thing when xbox live as had over 16 players online with full voice support (and voice support for every game) for over 6 years now. I'm sorry, Nintendo is way behind the curve on some aspects of technology. Ok rant over.
Nick are you having a chat with yourself i.e. your second account!
What like I have bipolar or something? Andy is disagreeing with me last I checked.
Dude, use the fucking return key. There is no way i'm reading your rant above until you do so!
So it'll be two Wii's straped together this time! The Wii's tech is so old you could probably fit it all into a matchbox, fucking A-Team style.
Honestly though, Nintendo should do a Sega and get out of the hardware business. Their best asset is/was designing games...
>>Honestly though, Nintendo should do a Sega and get out of the hardware business. Their best asset is/was designing games...
No, their best asset is defining the state of the gaming industry. They created the D-Pad, they created the Analog, they popuarlized motion sensing. All these things are hardware.
Your statement is one of the dumbest things that has ever been posted on Edge, that Nintendo, creator of the best selling consoles (NES and Wii), should get out of the console game like Sega did (Nintendo's one time rival that was always behind them). You can't possibly be that stupid, I hope it's just trolling.
You do know the world is a subjective environment, yeah, like...horses for courses n' all that.
...I didn't think so judging by your idiotic comments.
Andy, away and take yer face for a shite!
Nah, they shouldnt at all. F-ck wits with no memory of Sony constant lies are the undoing of Nintendo. If in the last gen people (like i did) realised Sonys over exasperated technological claims was to be a constant feature of Sony, do you not think they woulda brought GameCube instead? i mean, look at the dreamcast. Bare this in mind, i am a Nintendo fan, and there was a time this would pain me to say/admit, but the Dreamcast had the very finest selection of games that featured very little shovel ware, i say only the n64 came close to it in this respect, it DESERVED TO SUCCEED. But people held out for Ps2, and why? Because of that damned Toy story claim! They didnt see better visuals from the machine (Ps2) until 2 years into the ps2 life cycle, and Sega wasn't getting enough income to be able to stay in the console race with out going bankrupt. Nintendo lost a most worthy advisary in Sega, and got Phoney with it's "PS" brand (partialy sighted) Developers go where the game players at, so Nintendo lost in my opinion what made them great in NES SNES N64 erra, third party support. ALL of this because Sony are not averse to telling flagrant lies about their yet to be released machines, ps2 it was emotion engine can power ps2 to do Toy story in real time. But when it was apparent this was never to be, it was too late, massive user base. And that is what brings us to this "no faith in public" Nintendo with its now mamby pamby approach to gaming because they KNOW the ignorant masses (Sony f-ck wits customers) will lap up sony lies, like Lewis hamildon laps up at Nicole Swcerzingers punani(but in his defense, who wouldnt?). And Nintendo have too much self worth to stoop so low as to boast about false tech abilitys, and if you want proof of that, The game-cube was rated at 9 to 12 million polygons per second "in game" real conditions. Factor5 attained 18 million according to them "easily" with a game(Rogue squadron 2) that from begining of coding to actual release took a meare 9 months! master chief (halo 2) was built from if i remember correctly somthing like 9 thousand polygons. Were in Resident evil 4 (gamecube) characters where all made up of 18 thousand polygons each. Now put this in perspective, sony never stated the actual in game polygon ability of ps2, only that it could push 90 million flat lit triangles per second, and even microsoft used a simular aproach to describe power (125 million flat lit triangles per sec) but they never overclaimed their machine's ability with nonsense claimes like sony did, so microsoft have my respect. Now with the Wii being tha so far top selling machine this gen, whats to say they dont try their luck next gen and bring the visuals with control inovations? Remember folks, if it wasnt for nintendo, we probably wouldnt be using control pads anyway, but we are thank to them!(Controll pads first brought fourth by the big N)
I think one of the best points you make is if Nintendo brings the visuals along with the control method. I know they were going for cheap with the Wii, but if the next Wii introduces a feature set like the PS3/360 with visuals to match at a good price 249$ it COULD bring back the Nintendo faithful of old (me and I'm sure many others who preferred the NES/SNES/N64 and early GCN era). I'm a diehard Nintendo fan who had to cut ties when Nintendo dropped the ball with the GCN. They finally had the chance to upgrade to DVD-rom and have proper memory capacity (not lame cartridges with N64 that plagued Nintendo's success, yeah I'm talking about Final Fantasy being the turning point for Sony and Nintendo's downfall) and they went with mini-DVDs that only held around 3 gigs or so. Then dropping the ball with online multiplayer. The graphics were more than enough (Rogue Squadron 2 was a launch title and had real-time lighting, self shadowing, and bump-mapping a feat rarely accomplished last gen even for the mighty xbox).
Anyway, Nintendo can have their casual mainstream fans and also ALL of their fans from before if they make just a few changes and improvements. They've lost a lot of respect from many of their hardcore fans (Wii vitality sensor, really?) and could win them back if they make some effort. I know many of you say that Nintendo has released their Mario games, Zelda, Metroid etc. but for me it's more than that. It's also meeting current generation visuals and technological needs as well. But that's just me.
Nintendo is has had growing profits for 5 years (until Q4'09) and is one of the most profitable tech businesses. If you feel it is underpowered, dont buy one, but they have the most right to be in business than any other company.
If you feel it is underpowered, dont buy one
Don't worry, i didn't buy one. Personally, the Wii has to be the worst console Nintendo have released since the Virtual Boy.
As i pointed out in another topic, Nintendo just don't create the type of games i want to play anymore. Wii Fit, Wii Sports, the Vitality Sensor. WTF. lol.
^^ what a bunch of nonsense.
The Wii has been an unbelievable success for Nintendo and you suggest they should get out of the hardware business...
You don't work in business, right?
They should stick to what they were/are best at... and that was creating AAA games. Not anymore though, Nintendo aren't half the company they once were in the 80's/early 90's. Regardless of all those Wii's sold.
Nintendo are at a loose end, they themsevles don't even know where to go next.
Nintendo aren't best at producing AAA titles any more. That's simply not their focus. What are they best at? Producing and marketing a console that has unparallelled mass appeal. They are also massively profitable compared to their competitors..
To argue they are half the company they were in the 16-bit era is a quite blinkered view, surely?
They need to make it like the mobile phone in Zoolander - miniiiiiii & with a mini wand to control the games. Or they could make a proper powerglove
Powerglove! I want a powerglove, like that cool kid with the hair in that film the Wizard. Now if only I had the autism abilities to use one.....
Why make it more compact, if it still needs to be plugged in then does it really need to be any smaller than the current Wii?
