Miyamoto Discusses New Hardware Possibilities

A new Nintendo console would likely feature motion-control functionality, but be ìmore compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient".

Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto has said that a new console from the company would likely retain the motion-control functionality introduced with the Wii, but be “more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient".

"With both the Wii Remote itself and Wii Motion Plus, what we've been able to do is introduce an interface that is both I think appealing and at the right price for a broad audience,” the Mario creator told Popular Mechanics.

"And while we don't have any concrete plans for what we'll be doing with hardware in the future, what I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient."

Earlier this week in a discussion about high definition graphics, Miyamoto said that Nintendo's games would “move along in step with the progression of technology”, but the designer maintained that gameplay is still the company’s key focus.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter expects Nintendo to release a high definition Wii in 2010, while Square Enix president Yoichi Wada predicts the firm will launch a new Wii console by 2011.
