Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer on PS3 has returned after an outage caused by server overloads following the game’s record-breaking first day on sale.

The problems, which saw the Playstation Network rejecting all Modern Warfare 2 traffic after a problem with a thirdparty server led to a flurry of error messages, were quickly fixed on the server side, but a patch for the game is expected on Friday to repair the party system.

Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling, who used Twitter to keep PS3 gamers updated on the progress of the fix, said he expected “smooth skies ahead” after the patch was applied. Players were returned to the game slowly, 20,000 at a time, before the game returned to full capacity, with no further problems being reported.

I'm disappointed that this problem lead to all PS3 players having to be removed from the servers, this was during the evening when I wanted to play. I hope this problem doesnt reoccur and that the 3rd party involved knows the agrovation caused.

They were returning players slowly to the game - 20,000 at a time - I'm sure they may have been aware of a few pissed gamers in there somewhere. ; )

Though to be honest, even though they should have been sort of expecting it, I think they were working with unprecedented numbers, and it may have taken even them by surprise.
