Monster Hunter 3 Drives Wii Sales Boost In Japan

Wii sales rocketed in Japan during the week ended August 2, driven by the August 1 release of a black version of the console and the launch of Capcom’s Monster Hunter 3.

Weekly Wii sales quadrupled to 95,357 units, while Monster Hunter 3 achieved 520,000 sales to top the software chart, having shipped a million units to retail ahead of its launch. The black Wii and Capcom’s game were available separately or together as part of a new bundle.

Having topped the hardware and software charts for the previous three weeks, Nintendo’s DSi and Square Enix’s Dragon Quest IX both dropped to second place in the rankings.

Sales of all other hardware platforms were relatively flat week-on-week.

In total there were six new entries in the software top ten. Notable debutants included Sega’s Puyo Puyo 7 for DS at number five, which helped ensure that Nintendo platform titles took the top five spots, and Gears Of War 2, which moved 49,000 copies to enter at number six.
