Brothers in Arms house Gearbox Software has “definitely had conversations with Microsoft about doing a new Halo game,” according to a Variety report.
Ben Fritz with Variety’s The Cut Scene blog backed up rumors earlier this week that Gearbox is working on the unannounced Halo 4, citing an unnamed source.
The source reportedly also said there is no concrete deal in place.
Gearbox is currently developing Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Samba de Amigo.
The developer’s website confirms that a mystery title is also in development. Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said of the mystery game, "I’ve started a new project. It's big. It's, like, 'look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger' kind of big. I’m directing it myself. I can't mention it publicly yet. When you find out what this is, you'll likely agree that I can't oversell this one."
Microsoft has yet to return request for comment, but don’t count on a Halo 4 confirmation any time soon.
So I wonder how many of the 3 projects Bungie is working on are Halo related? I know bungie is at least working on one Halo game (their confirmation, not mine), and Microsoft is developing the Peter Jackson Halo game in-house. So neither of those must be direct Halo sequels, and instead, spin-offs of some sort. The rumor is Bungie is working on a Rainbow Six style tactical shooter using the ODSTs instead of Master Chief. Who knows. Microsoft obviously has a lot of Halo titles to announce over the next 1-2 years or so.
