Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has reportedly confirmed plans to release a Natal equipped Xbox 360 next year.

In a speech at The Executive’s Club of Chicago, he said the new Xbox 360 will feature technology that is “really close” to an actuality, a built in motion sensing camera and a “natural interface," according to TG Daily.

Following Ballmer’s speech Kotaku spoke to Xbox 360 director of product management Aaron Greenberg. He told the site that “we're not going to be launching a new console any time soon," before acknowledging that Microsoft was considering making a Natal equipped Xbox 360 console. "Yes, we have looked at that, but we haven't announced any details for something like that."

Project Natal is going to be a joke.

MarkJFerreri's picture

I'm sure the Natal, unlike many other add-ons for many of the consoles in my past, Wii be very successful, and will be supplied by a rich assortment of 3rd party games. "They're not reinventing the wheel(there is no wheel)". So if this is a joke, not even Sony is laughing. Corp.'s like EA and Ubisoft, as well as gaming business celebs are also excited about this. I can hardly waait for them to work the bugs out of the software and increase the response time to gaming speed.

(And then send Obama a free sample and see what he says about gaming vs. exercise)

depends on what they do with it, we will see.

Funny... I'm pretty sure that's what we all said about the Wii when it was announced. Oh, and that vitality sensor.. hehehe. Come-on.

BTW, I don't know who said it; but don't be silly making the presumption that Natal will built into the 360 console itself; it will be packed in with 360's just like the Wii sensor bar. This will guarantee an install base for developers in the same way that the Dual Shock and Controller-S were bundled with their respective systems after the already had an established controller.

Ok, I don't know what kind of floor you have that will make you xbox bounce when you jump. How much do you weigh, and how high can you jump???

And dubs, MS confirmed a Natal equipped 360 to release in 2010, that's not a confirmation to you? There's not date or price, but if it's equipped there's not way they're going to INCREASE the cost of the system to accomodate that. It'll function as a PS3 style "value increase" while keeping the cost the same.

I haven't though of the position problem implied if the Natal comes built-in the Xbox, well I already have mine so I;ll just buy the Natal and game on.

Wow, Ballsmer and Greenby in the same story? Couldn't we get a quote from sunglasses douchebag in there for good measure?

Let me know when there's are specs, an actual release date and a price. Pretty bored with Project Vapor.

NickgamertagO1's picture

You're bored, then why do you keep posting about "project vapor"? We won't mind if you don't trust me.

DubsTF's picture

While I'm certain that's true, please note that there's a difference between being bored with the endless blather about Project Vapor and being bored with calling Microsoft on their B.S.

Why do you keep asking for spec's?

It's a camera. Does it matter if it has 400MHz or 600MHz processor? It's not going to improve the graphics/sound or anything.

This controller sounds whack! Call me when you know how many buttons it has!

DubsTF's picture

Fair enough: I'll settle for just price and release date, then.

And no, some vague Ballsmer comment about a "new console in 2010" doesn't count as a release date.

[insert preemptive witty rejoinder about "not holding my breath" / "inhaling the vapor"]

This is big gamble.

Microsoft is attempting to make the Natel-Box their next console. It's a good idea, but it does leave the field wide open for a competitor. Every few years, Someone new comes along to force someone out.

Still unsure on this.....

IF the hardware has camera built in etc..you`d have to have machine pointing at you and IF it use`s Optical media-I.E Disc...then buy jumping around like a loon...are you NOT risking the disc to jump? laser burn etc?.

SolidStrife's picture

Only if you're fat.

And if you are, not to worry, you can't jump high enough anyway.

Plus unless you position the 360 in a certain way it'll just overheat anyway and then your brand new Natal equipped 360 will RROD. Incidentally, in all this Natal promotion has MS even mentioned if this has been solved yet? I've met people on their 5th unit now.

Meh.
