The government has launched a new anti-obesity campaign promoting active gaming among children as a means of keeping fit and healthy.
The Department of Health's new TV campaign depicts a number of ways for children to get the recommended 60 minutes a day of exercise, including playing active videogames.
"Active videogames, where kids need to jump up and down or dance about as part of the game, are a great way to get kids moving more," Dawn Primarolo, the minister for public health, told the Guardian.
"Little bits of activity like this, throughout the day can easily add up to the 60 active minutes kids need. But our survey shows that at the moment our kids just aren't getting up and about enough."
The move marks a U-turn by the government, following the March release of a Change4Life ad which implied that playing games could lead to an early death.
The print ad in question, which was created by the Department of Health in association with Cancer Research, The British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK, depicted a young boy sitting indoors holding what looked like a PlayStation pad beneath the words 'Risk an early death. Just do nothing.'
It's great how the health department make such wonderful U-turns...bloody hypocrites
Just a thought - perhaps the government should be encouraging schools to do more PE classes instead of cutting back on them so kids can do more maths etc. If kids don't learn at an early age that excercise is fun then they are unlikely to make time for it when they become adults.
Also I'm sure computers games play their part in helping - I know I went and had a game of tennis after really getting into Virtua Tennis. Of course I was terrible, but that's besides the point, I'm sure lots of other people have been equally encouraged to try something new thanks to video games.
their next campaign is to go after people who play board games like chess and monopoly.
sitting there for hours is DEADLY!
glad they've stopped with the dramatic propaganda and actually try to give kids more of a realistic message. we should be teaching kids moderation in all things instead of trying to scare them into physical activity. and i really do feel that most overweight kids are just that because its the parents who start off bad habits young (improper diets, hours in front of the tv), and set those examples themselves. with campaign turnarounds like these maybe the "war on video games" can finally come to a close soon.
has anyone got the picture from the advert mentioned above? The one with the kid sitting holding a playstation controller. It sounds like the advert is very funny. It seems out of a comedy sketch. I wonder if it reads: 'There is a charity that wants to see more people like this'. Anyone remember the psone advert of the blistered hands with that slogan runnning on the bottom of the page? Well it can be applied again...
Whatever happen to playstation being cool?? I guess it became pop
The way my girlfriend plays Wii Sports, especially the boxing, is definately good exercise. Also, Dance Dance Revolution (and similar products) should be good for kids.
Lol, make the lardy little snots go for a run or play sport, playing games psshh lose more weight walking down to the dairy. The amount of beerguts I've seen develop around rockband (however it's definitely more of a workout than Wii fit lol).
