12My shiny new copy arrived in this morning's post. My usual quick flick through has made me realise that, with the month's important releases (Bastion, From Dust, Ms. Splosion Man) being digital, I've read a fair bit of this issue online already. Still plenty more to it, but I can see the Review section becoming more of a catch-up piece as time goes on, and digital releases take over....
Interesting visual style to Dishonoured (I'll happily add in the 'U'), though I don't think the main image does the game engine a lot of favours.
Yes, times are a-changing and we've made the decision for this site to lead with reviews so we can be timely with them. A monthly schedule and access to review copies has increasingly made timeliness for reviews in the magazine impossible.
We hope, though, that our new Post Scripts that accompany most reviews in the magazine compensate for the fact that they may have featured on this site already. Having the extra time to be able to put more thought into developing themes and talking to developers about their decisions means, we hope, they have real lasting value.
I can certainly see the logic, and think it's a good move. The new format definitely allows for a little depth and analysis on the big releases, and builds on the base review side which we get on the site.
Changing with the times is clearly the right thing to do, but the traditionalist in me shall miss the excitement of opening a new issue of Edge and rushing to the review section to compare scores and, on a few fleeting occassions, have the pleasure of unearthing an unexpected 10. I'll always remember my jaw literally dropping when I discovered Bayonetta's maximum.
The digital future has all sorts of wonderful and exciting benefits, it's just a shame that it's often at the expense of a little of life's romance.
Oh God another ugly-as-sin cover (I've looked at the magazine page). I'm not happy about the redesign of Edge anyway but please do something about the covers. Ugly and abysmal. Oh Edge where have the classy, striking inages of old gone? Lose all the arty lines and messy text- and that bloody stupid '£five' while you're at it. It's embarrasing.
Not a good Monday, by any chance...?
Apologies for sounding like I'm always griping, but for the third month in a row Edge is late at newsagents- it's nowhere to be seen today. Drastic redesigns and missing distribution deadlines have indicated the impending death of many magazines I've bought in the past. I don't like the new look and it's getting to be a right pain getting a copy. I've bought Edge since issue one and I'm really considering not bothering anymore. Its ugly inside, it looks like the competiton (your last cover and that of GameTM looked identical) and its late/hard to find (supermarkets no longer stock it). Whats going on?
I totally agree with "ghost of 82" on the Edge magazines arriving late at the news stands.I live in Guildford and last month's edition didnt hit the stores/news-agents till about 3/4 days after it had been declared officially out on this site.I however like the new design, cover, etc.I am not completely pleased with the rating system but I'll survive.
PS:Please do something about the late arrivals,I have not bothered to take the long walk to the WHSmith at the train station to pick this month's copy 'cos I know it won't be there yet.
Both my Edge super mario year planner and the first three words of this article are wrong. Guess I'll wait, again...
You guys are lucky. I live in the US and my copies come 2 sometimes 3 weeks late. I agree about the cover also, I hope this one is a bit better in person but I have not liked the last 2.
Bah, my copy hasn't turned up yet.
I have no issue with the lateness or the redesign, I happen to think it's really slick and I'm a fan of Futura anyway ;-)
Might I suggest reviewing some of the more obscure games in the mag we may not have heard about? That would at least offer something the website could not?
Hi there,
I want to add my voice to the lateness issue. I'm a subscriber currently living in Belgium and I usually get my issue of EDGE very late. For example I received the July issue last week... I mean Belgium isn't that far from the UK so I don't understand why it takes so long...
Love the new design though!
