Fresh rumours of a new PS3 motion-sensing controller suggest Sony may be preparing to unveil such a device as early as this year’s E3 event in June.
A “good source” told Variety that they saw a working prototype several months ago that largely fitted with the specifications outlined in a Sony patent for a “detectable and trackable hand-held controller” filed in 2007.
The controller will apparently use light emitting diodes and a small webcam to detect the controller's exact position with far more accuracy than the Wii Remote is capable of.
Sony is said to have select developers already creating early software for use with the controller, although the company opted not to comment on the report.
As long as it's technically accurate and well implemented in games I'm all for it. I'm all for new ways of playing games. But if it's vague and only results in Wan... Waggle, no thank you.
All those flat out ripping on this as a copy or "who wants a new controller", only need to look at the music peripheral market, and realise people WILL pay crazy amounts of money for niche interfaces. However it will take the back seat to regular Dual Shock controls (just like sixaxis) as it has 100% of the market. This has the potential to be good, but won't be wildly successful. Basically another eyetoy.
Wow, 3 years in third place before they release their own Wiimote? They could have done this 6 months after launch. Were they really so worried about copying? The PSX controller is copied from the SNES, analog control is ripped from the N64, analog triggers are ripped from the Dreamcast. Not to mention that everyone else ripped the dual-analog & 4 trigger design from them.
Get over it. Release a P3mote already.
Six months after launch Sony was still a cocky company and still believed the PS3 was flying of the shelves, still believed that the Wii was just a fad that will die withing the next couple of months and still believed the next-generation of console started with the launch of the PS3.
Oh Sony, going from "Leader" to "Follower" on so many things this generation.
I really like Sony's Playstation, but what exactly has Sony innovated?
Their PSx controller is based on the N64 controller. The Dreamcast had online gaming, and the original Xbox implemented it better than Sony. The Playstation used CDs, but Sega did that first.
What Sony did well with the Playstation was probably more in the line of the software and the game library. I'm not knocking Sony, but execution rather than innovation probably been their strong point.
What would be really great is if they made software updates available for people with an interest in this type of peripheral - instead of forcing it upon people, resulting in slews of mediocre, poorly executed titles and only a few gems that actually use the technology properly. It would also, of course, extend the life cycle of certain games as they then could be experienced in a new and possibly interesting way. Nintendo did pave the way for Microsoft and Sony though - and they can be thankful for that as neither of these companies have dared taking this type of risk.
not so bothered about waggle integration in PS3 games but accurate pointing in FPSs etc. YES PLEASE!!
