Sony will drop the PSP’s UMD drive and introduce a sliding screen when it unveils its new model handheld at E3 this year, according to 1UP.
Citing developers directly involved with the new system, the site says that the portable will be called PSP Go!, adopting the branding already attached to a number of European PSP products.
It will retain the same button configuration used on existing models including a d-pad, analogue nub and face buttons, and won’t feature twin analogue stick controls.
The site also says that PSP Go! will be available in two SKUs, with either eight or 16 GB of built-in flash memory.
It is expected to launch in Japan this September and later in the year in other territories, with over 100 classic and new PSP titles available for download at launch.
Sony said that it doesn't comment on "rumour and speculation" when contacted by Edge this morning.
the more nubs the better, mutiple nub...
a little bored with digital only downloading that is constricted by the memory capacity of the device (like the wii until recently), i know some people are happy to chop and change a la ipod nanos but for those of us that like the capacity to put everything they have on their device this is truly is suck arse.
also, i for one don't like having to data manage every time i buy something else..or redownload and not be in control of my data...pfff... i do find it entertaining that sony and nintendo with their handheld devices are starting to resemble the hacked and r4 card varieties with the data flexibility.
and i'm pretty sure that sony haven't got an itunes like data management tool set to go that will let me save the files on my hardware (unless of course they have...and then i'll still be annoyed because there will only be one nub, but less so...).
I'm worried that we'll end up with an "almost right" device. It sounds like there's no slot for a memory stick; which would relagate the device to farting & beer apps the iPhone has become famous for. I don't see any reason to buy a device that copies what I already have. Most importantly, they NEED to update the hardware. The DSi only attracts people who don't have a DS yet. I worry Sony's headed down that path.
Again with the multi SKU approach with the defining feature the storage size. Can't they take a not from Nintendo and have only one SKU at a time?
The iPod, iPhone and the 360 have multiple SKU's based on storage size. If it works for Apple and MS, then there's no reason for it not to work for Sony.
Alot of people want a second analog nub on the PSP. If they have touch-screen then will the be a need for one? FPS etc would work bter with touch screen than a second nub. Specially for PC like FPS control aka Metroid prime hunters.
I'll stick with my old PSP since this doesn't add a second analog nub. This is kind of like the tweaks Nintendo has done for their handhelds (DS/DS Lite/DSi) - great if you don't already have one, but worthless if you already do.
If this it true then I could very well be up for buying my first PSP. If it plays nice with my PS3 and it has touchscreen and two sticks, then colour me sold
I always felt that Sony made alot of mistakes with the original design of the PSP. To me they tried to take on the GAMBOY however Nintendo had other plans and was going threw major changes within the company which today are very evident.
It wouldn't surprise me if the PSP:Go has a multi-touch screen to add to that list. Considering how well they are being utilised for IPHONE and DS systems. Sony is obviously trying to take on the DS and IPhone markets, and if there's one thing Sony can be credited on doing very well it's taking existing idea's and making it there own.
The new PSP I think if included with a touch screen will do extremely well in all territories. However the DS was released in 2004 and Nintendo is already on the 3rd incarnation of the Hardware. So at E3 we could very well see a new Handheld from Nintendo or at the very least a confirmation from IWATA that it's coming. This would flt into Nintendo's traditional timeline.
Yeehaw, long live PSP!
P.S. No Picard pics please! :))
Nice!
i had a psp & it was a piss take when i used up my memory card. im glad sony has thought about putting a 16gb flash drive in the psp.
thumbs up!
