Xbox Live GM Marc Whitten has said that the introduction of new features to the service will greatly add to the Xbox 360’s lifecycle.
“I think we should continue to see how far we can evolve the experience just through software,” he told CVG when asked about the next generation of hardware.
Specifically, Whitten was referring to recently announced plans for an Xbox 360 Games On Demand service and Zune Video marketplace, as well as Xbox Live Facebook and Twitter integration and the company's controller free gaming offering Project Natal.
“Frankly regardless of when, if and how we see the next hardware platform, this one will have legs for years and years to come,” Whitten said. “We will be able to do so much with what we have with the Xbox 360 – sitting in everyone’s living room, everybody connected together.
“The magic is really that 20 million people are connected to each other and they’re enjoying this content together in the living room… I think you can also see with Project Natal that there are things you can do to add to that experience.”
Sounds like they found out the hard way that unless they can create a system that actually turns a profit or breaks them even every time they sell a console then they will try to stick with what they have and add stuff to it. Kinda reminds me of all the stuff that got added to the super nintendo and sega genesis before finally they came out with some new console that changed the landscape of gaming. I can see the current consoles still being sold in 2015, but Sony, MS and Nintendo better have new consoles out before that time.

"Years" of game developers being chained to obsolete hardware. Yay.
"New Services Will Add “Years” To Xbox 360’s Life"
Or don't expect a new console anytime soon.
Project Natal won't be until next year at the earliest, but the others are all due for launch in 2009
my head spins just thinking about how many directions Live can expand. and the genius behind it all is the simplicity, since these services already exist on the web.
Netflix, Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm now which, granted, isn't going to set the world on fire but tomorrow sports games live (mlb/nfl, etc), rhapsody and even entire networks like ESPN, HBO and the Weather Channel or some kind of 360-esque facsimile.
all of this content is already being streamed, it's just a matter of allowing subscribers to tap into it via their 360's.
the Netflix model shows how easily this console could replace cable boxes altogether.
And all this is available on the PS3 (via the built in web browser) yet nobody in Sony towers seems able to communicate this. Seriously Sony need to sack their marketing team and give the job to a bunch of ordinary gamers.
micro soft and sony are hust trying to compete with pc gaming with their consoles. There is genius there I wouldn't be supised if microsoft has people tracking all the pc gamers debates. Pc gaming had montion control for years now even beofre inntendo even thought of it.

Are there any dates on any of these features? I assume Natal is the furthest out but what about Facebook and Twitter integration - when is that happening?
