Nintendo has announced New Super Mario Bros. Wii at its E3 press conference.
The 2D sidescroller is the product of 15 years of Miyamoto attempting to find a new way for gamers to play Mario games, according to Nintendo of America's Cammie Dunaway.
The main game mode can be played in single player or four player co-op and you can switch between the two at any time.
Warp pipes and hidden areas are all present and you can pick up and carry or throw other players, while item boxes generally produce one item for each player.
The title’s set to launch worldwide in holiday 2009.
Nintendo has released this official product description: “Developers at Nintendo have dreamed of creating a simultaneous multiplayer Super Mario Bros. game for decades. The Wii console finally makes that dream come true for everyone this holiday season. Now players can navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time on the same level at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
“With the multiplayer mode, the newest instalment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced Super Mario Bros. fun.”
Are they actually suggesting I buy a 50 dollar game for the Wii that's the same as a 25 dollar game for the DS? This is either a new release that just happens to be a traditional Mario platformer, or it's just a ridiculous port.
I hope it's a sequel rather than a port. Apart from the fact that it's four player and features something like 80 levels I can't remember the details of the presentation.
it's not a port. apart from the visual style it only shares it's name with the ds offering. apparently some of the levels are based on "classic" levels but adapted to suit the four player style. it sounds like this is almost entirely designed with multiplayer in mind so if you don't fancy playing mario with friends then you'll just have to wait for super mario galaxy 2.
ps the spin attack from galaxy is also in new super mario bros wii
Good to hear, the DS game was a pure jolt of old school gameplay, another dose of that will do quite nicely.
As are the propeller and penguin suits.
Talk about milking a franchise... ^^
All joking aside, another DS update on the Wii? Why is Nintendo pulling games for DS/GCN and "updating" them? I don't know about Mario fans (I used to be one) but I'd be a bit upset if I wasn't getting a full-fledged sequel. But then again, I'm happy to play ODST...
I'm glad you pointed out your own hypocrisy!
But truth be told, I never mind Mario games being released because they're usually always great. This isn't an update or port of the DS New Super Mario Bros. This is a BRAND NEW game in the NSMB series. I own, played, and beat NSMB on the DS and nothing in the video is reminiscent to the DS version.
See Square-Enix for the correct definition of "milking".
Got it.
My comment was more of a dig at the guy who said MS is milking Halo because they're releasing Reach next year. Mario games have one of the best track records when it comes to quality. I don't think they're can be too many Mario games (I mean traditional Mario platformers, not the Mario spin-off/party games, there's def too many of those ^^).
Some Mario spin-offs are just awesome, ie. Paper Mario series, Mario Kart series, Mario & Luigi series, Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, Mario Strikers series, etc...
But others... not so much, ie. Mario Party, Mario & Sonic Olympics, et al.
And I agree with you, two new Halo spin-offs don't constitute a milking of the franchise in my opinion either.
Indeed! I also want a proper sequel.
Where's Super Mario Moonshine!
"Koopa has tainted all the water in the kindom. The only way Mario can stop him is to travel across the galaxy, & find Kirby: The Star Warrior to learn how to suck up all the "moonshine".
