Sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii have topped ten million units worldwide in just eight weeks.
The Wii exclusive title has shifted over three million copies in Japan, over 4.5 million in North America and around three million in Europe, according to Nikkei (translated by Kotaku).
Last week it was reported that sales of the 2D game had surpassed those of 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy in the United States. The more recent release of the two was the third bestselling game in the US and Japan during 2009, and the eleventh bestseller in the UK.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said last year that New Super Mario Bros. Wii had been developed “under the concept of ‘everyone's game’ with the goal that [it] would satisfy everyone, from veteran gamers to the novice players”. He also correctly noted that it had the potential to sell over ten million units.
