Nintendo has released an image of its new Wii controller, dubbed Classic Pro.
The image above, released onto Nintendo's own website, shows what essentially looks like a bulky classic controller with additional prongs, together resembling the GameCube controller layout or even Microsoft's own Controller S.
Eagle-eyed observers will have noticed the shoulder-button layout has changed, omitting the two inner-lane circler buttons and replacing them with a classic DualShock shoulder setup. The layout alteration ends any initial idea that Nintendo is releasing additional plastic padding for the already-available Classic Controller; this is a new model.
Beyond what can be seen, however, details of the unit remain scarce. The unit is coming sometime this Summer in Japan, though nothing has been confirmed beyond. Expect the unit attach to a Wii Remote much like the original Classic Controller, but any type of sixaxis-esque motion detection seems unlikely.
What's more interesting is Nintendo's own purpose for releasing the controller; whether this upgrade means more 3D titles will come to the virtual console (perhaps beyond N64 games), and whether it means Nintendo is set to release more traditionally-controlled games for the Wii itself.

A logical controller for the second phase of the Wii's life. This doesn't mean Nintendo's going back to their hardcore roots. It's just that the novelty of the Wii's first controller is beginning to wear out. It was fun at first but hey, really, after a hard day's work at the office, the last thing I want to be doing is to be up on my feet swinging about with a videogame controller.
Because nintendo has chosen it, this proves the obvious superiority of the PS dualshock to the 360
wow...the ps3 pad is a fucking snes controller!
Anyways, I was thinking, they may have did this to allow for future firmware updates to allow this to be used as a gamecube controller as well, considering Nintendo doesn't produce GC controllers anymore and 3rd parties are super cheap on theirs.
<3 Whiskey.
And, so begins the complaining fanboy parade
Wow, you said that as if your shit doesn't stink. And we all know that isn't true!
I mean, come on...you've got an NES as your avatar FFS.
Really? We all know that isn't true? Do you know anything about me at all ? What are you basing your comment on? Do you know what consoles I own? What consoles I play regularily? What kinds of games I like to play? What products I do and don't like? Because my avatar shows a 25 year old system, you think that means i'm arrogant and my "shit don't stink?" Such a sad display.
Why don't they just give me a fucking Dual Shock. They'd be as well because there is no innovation here what-so-ever. Nintendo suck.
Hehe, DS3 clone.
Wow, it's a fucking PS3 pad.
Other than the possible inclusion of force feedback, this can only be seen as a consumer exploit as the classic and this "classic pro" are otherwise identical.
@ Huw Jass......ummmm yeah I don't know if you realize this, but the classic controller was originally supposed to snap onto the wiimote. That's the reason for the button and slots.
As for Nintendo "copying off of the DualShock".....you do realize that everything you have today on the controllers is due to Nintendo originally anyways, right? Shoulder buttons, triggers, thumbsticks, d-pads, memory cards (in controller or systrem) vibration, motion (power glove too), wireless....soooo I really don't think it's legitimate to say Nintendo copied off of anybody.
Yes, Nintendo has introduced many innovations to the market, but not everything you mention was introduced by Nintendo.
Fact checking time!!!!
Shoulder buttons - First apperared on Super nintendo. The SNES was also the first controller to have shoulders.
Triggers - First appeared on Sega Saturn 3D Pad. The Z-Button on the N64 controller is just a simple digital button. The triggers on the Saturn 3D Pad are analog responsive.
Thumbsticks - If you are talking Analog Joysticks, Nintendo was not first, The GCE Vectrex, Atari 5200 and the Bally Astrocade had analog joysticks way back when. If you are talking about Analog joysticks that just happen to have the Analog stick positioned to be accessed by the thumb...the Sega Saturn 3D pad actually arrived in several markets before Nintendo 64, although who really know who thought of it first, developed first, prototyped it first, developed software for it first, and then actaully manufactured and sold it first.
D-pads - First appeared on the Nintendo NES (and God bless them for it!)
Memory Cards - External Memory has been around since the TG-16 and Sega CD (at least). Sony Playstation had Memory cards before Nintendo. Sega Saturn had a Memory Catridge.
Vibration - Nintendo 64 Rumble pack was first.
Motion (power glove) - no arguement there. Although it should be noted the Power Glove was made by
Mattel, not Nintendo, and still sucked regardless.
Wireless - By what definition. I remember the Atari 2600 having wireless controllers available for it.
Ssssshhh. Don't spoil their fun.
Dual Shock rip off. Looks like some cheap 3rd party DS3 controller.
I would like to point out what Kenology pointed out before, the PS1 controller was just a reshaped SNES controller with two extra shoulder buttons.
"PS1 controller was just a reshaped SNES controller with two extra shoulder buttons". Bollocks to that statement!
Listen, nobody owns ideas. The fact that nintendo ripped off a10+ year old design speaks for itself. A bit more thought and i'm sure they could've come up with something better than this.
This is just a cheap shot at HCI (Human Computer Interaction).
"nobody owns ideas" - lmao, run along and settle those patent disputes then Dollard.
Patents are like a soccer players contract i.e. they denote fuck all. Also, you misunderstood my "nobody owns ideas" quote, by that i mean everybody expands on ideas originally thought up by the other person/firm. Look at all the controllers since the Atari 2600 controller for example!
Ideas are out there floating about. Nobody owns them.
Looks like a pregnant Wii controller.
I don't really get why this is necessary. Other than the prongs and the slightly redesigned shoulder buttons, it's exactly the same. I kind of prefer the Super Famicom style of the original classic controller.
Maybe it has force feedback.
I have to say, it looks very similar to the Dual Shock controller.
I wish Microsoft would include a new Xbox 360 controller inside the Xbox 360 where everything is the exact same except the D-Pad.
Xbox 360 has the highest rated controller in gamng history, but everyone agrees it is difficult to pull off circular style motions precisely. C'mon Microsoft, give us what we want--design a new D-Pad on the awesome controller!
I've just had a look at the back of the current Wii Classic Controller (don't ask) and I can see a slot. There's also a button at the top of the controller that, when pushed, appears to eject whatever is in the slot.
With this in mind I wonder whether there was meant to be some sort of add on for it.
I'm actually interested in this if it allows me to play my GC games with a wireless controller. But then... the picture suggests this controller will not be wireless to begin with.
Get a Wavebird, best controller ever made.
Yeah, maybe I should. It's just been keeping me from playing the GC games and there's quite a few I'd actually like to finish at some point. But... if this thing plugs into the wireless controller, it might be interesting too.
They're tidy, Soul Calibur 2 with 2 wavebirds and a coupe of full couches is a riot. I've got a classic which plugs in to the wireless in the same way and you don't get the same feeling of freedom, you've got this big lump hanging there, er...
Yeah anyway, they're the best. Actually you've just reminded me I've not finished killer 7 yet. :)
Well, the controller plugs into the Wii remote and not the Wii...so I guess you could call it wireless.
Not a surprise and I wouldn't read too much into their intentions with this. Nintendo loves releasing overpriced pieces of white plastic every few months which they then fail to support afterwards.
I don't think thisis some new controller or something, just a different shape for the classic.
When I saw the pic, I thought Dual Shock, too. I wonder what Sony's response will be.

Basically a PS3 pad then.
The PS3 pad in it's infancy (during the PS1 era) was basically a rip of the SNES pad to begin with.
It's still basically a PS3 pad, regardless of who done what first. The Snes pad was shit by the way. No kudos for Nintendo here.
PlayStation and PlayStation2 games coming to the Virtual Console - Confirmed!
where did you get that from? I love the idea for it, but i cant see it happening.
Check mate.
