New Wii Storage Solution Announced

System menu 4.0 allows for high-capacity storage cards.

At GDC on Wednesday, Nintendo announced a new solution to the Wii's limited storage capabilities.

Wii's System Menu 4.0 now allows high-capacity SD cards to be used on Wii. An icon for the storage now appears on the menu, and is available as an update immediately. HCSD cards can be as large as 32GB.

The high-capacity cards are capable of holding up to 240 game files. Saves cannot load directly from the card, rather they must be copied to the Wii's internal memory.

However, players can save WiiWare and Virtual Console games directly to memory cards, and launch saved titles from those games from the card.

Previously, the Wii could only handle up to 2GB SD cards.
