Shigeru Miyamoto didn’t turn up to present at Nintendo's E3 press conference yesterday, but he was on hand afterwards to offer details about the company’s next Zelda title for Wii.
"We really wanted to announce a Zelda game for Wii here at this year's E3," Miyamoto told Official Nintendo Magazine. "But we've already shown you a Zelda on Wii, and rather than try to think of something to bring here to show you we really wanted to focus on actual game development."
Miyamoto said that the new Zelda adventure is "quite far into development” and could release next year.
"We hope to bring it to you next year. It may take a little longer. And another thing about Wii Zelda is that we'd like to make it compatible with Wii MotionPlus. It's quite possible that it will be playable only with MotionPlus. The potential for it becoming MotionPlus only depends on how much Wii Sports Resort sells."
He also noted that Nintendo is experimenting with gameplay styles to move the series forward.
"We have been talking for quite a while about what exactly Zelda is and how we define this franchise. Obviously the graphics have improved over time but the gameplay is something that we've been sitting down as a team and talking about. What can we do to move Zelda forward?"
I'm actually surprised at how many decent games are out there which were never shown at either of the 'the big 3's' conferences. (check out gametrailers - there's loads!)
They only showed a pic of Zelda spirit tracks at the show , but an e3 gameplay trailer has just been released, and it looks good! A lot like Phantom Hourglass , except you now have a Train to ride , and a whip as a new weapon.
Endless ocean 2 looks great ( it's not for everyone I guess - but the graphics are really good -( for the wii.))
Best of all the second Professor Layton game should be out here by the end of August. (There's a trailer for that too.)
Also , check out 'Muscle March' - looks like the maddest game ever!
totally agree, I'm quite pleased about a vandal hearts game on xbox live and psn.
Balderdash! they already have a mario on wii but they didn't hesitate us to show some of it.
I am skeptical of a 2010 release. Nintendo has never released a legitimate Zelda title in the same year it's offiically announced.
My prediction is a holiday 2010 release after an extensive showing next years E3. I mean, they used up Mario and Metroid this E3. If they don't have a major franchise every E3, we get a backlash like last year. They'll save this for next E3, having played their Mario and Metroid cards this E3.
I doubt it'll have a 2010 release as well. I'd love to be surprised though. The reason we see another Mario on Wii (Mario Galaxy 2) is because the engine is already done. For Zelda Wii, a brand new engine has to be created being as though Twilight Princess is essentially a Gamecube game.
I hope Nintendo wouldn't consider using the twilight engine and just "modifying" it instead of building an engine from the ground up to take advantage of Wii's added power.
Either way, it'll turn out just fine. Twilight Princess used a modified Wind Waker engine but was technically superior in every way.
