News Corp Social Gaming Exec Poached By Facebook
Sean Ryan joins Facebook as director of games partnerships less than six months after joining News Corp.
Facebook has appointed Sean Ryan as director of games partnerships, just six months after he took up a similar position at Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.
Ryan joined News Corp last July and was charged with setting up a new social gaming unit for the media giant. It had recently acquired social gaming developer Irata Labs and tasked Ryan with heading up development of a social gaming platform that would be compatible with Facebook, iPhone, Android and News Corp’s own Myspace.
However sources have told All Things Digital that Ryan was in discussions about a job with Facebook before he even joined News Corp. Inside Social Games reports that ever since, Facebook has had an open job listing for the very position Ryan has now taken up.
As director of games partnerships Ryan will be tasked with keeping the various developers of Facebook games onside. Zynga, by some way the most successful developer on the social networking site, nearly walked away from Facebook last May because of a row over the Facebook Credits system.
Before joining News Corp, Ryan was CEO of virtual world turned social gaming firm Meez, acting CEO of LiveJournal, and the founder of prepaid card firm Zeus Research.
