Graphics chip firm Nvidia has reportedly won a contract to provide technology for a next-gen Nintendo handheld.
Citing anonymous sources, IT news site BSN reports that Nvidia will supply a “Tegra system-on-chip processor” for the successor to the DS/DSi.
The site suggests that the new handheld will launch in late 2010, featuring “smarter” graphics and likely DS backwards compatibility.
In June, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang forecast that Tegra would generate 50 per cent of the firm’s revenue within the next couple of years. Tegra technology is already used in Microsoft’s Zune HD multimedia player and Samsung's BeatPlayer M1.
When contacted for comment Nintendo UK labelled the report "rumour and speculation".
Semiconductor firm AMD has also reportedly secured a deal to create the graphics processor for Microsoft’s next Xbox.
Agreed. DS is getting long in the tooth for sure. Sony should definitely be worried as after this I doubt they'll be able to play the hardware card. I mean they should already be worried. But now they should start shitting bricks. I think Nintendo have positioned themselves rather well to deliver a nice sucker punch. As they're upgrading a system with pretty old hardware the graphical update will be pretty big really delivering that 'wow' factor. Consider me hyped.
Can't wait to see if they go into digital distribution a lot heavier. I don't expect them too, but I guess it's possible. Carts are cool, but so expensive and restricting.
That Tegra chip is quite impressive. Maybe Nintendo's finally tired of hearing their products are underpowered. DS is getting long in the tooth - definitely time for a new handheld from them.
Is it? Looking at some of the recent games, there still seems to be plenty of life in it yet.
I suspect you mean the new Layton game in particular, I agree that it is good but what more can they do with it going forward on the current hardware? A more powerful device would definitely spruce things up a bit, imagine something close to a Gamecube in your hand? Not out of the question a PSP is effectively a gimped PS2.
Although i guess you could argue that it would suffer from the same problems as the PSP in the way of Dev costs and people gaming on the go not really wanting fully fledged games. I just think games like Mario and co really suit the arcade style short bursts of play anyway.
I've felt for ages that a DS 2 is coming nice to know the old bat senses aren't waning, This will be a license to print money.
.......and a bigger viewing screen, more decent selection of FPS games, and that would just about do it for me.
They will no doubt try to keep the battery life as long as possible though so I don't expect it to have a huge screen. I guess similar height, but widescreen this time.
I wonder if they'll do something like iPod Touch/PSP and offer additional functions like music/movies/browser. Personally, I hope not and Nintendo (to their credit) seems to stay focused more on games than the other stuff, but it should be interesting to see if they're feeling heat from Apple, in particular. (And yes, I do know that they have some of these functions already as add-ons - I'm talking out of the box at launch).
