Nintendo is planning a new DS, aimed at the portable entertainment market, with an added focus on functionality such as camera and MP3 player.
According to a Sunday report in Japan's Nikkei Net (subscription required) the new machine will offer improved wireless capabilities. It will cost around 20,000 yen ($188), which is around $20 more than the current version's price.
According to Nikkei, "Nintendo plans to offer several hundred thousand units in Japan before considering overseas sales."
Nintendo is planning to hold a press conference later this week, when, no doubt, more information will be released.
No image of the new DS has been released as yet.
Made a quick wishlist for an upcoming DS (not for this addition):
hardware:
- faster 3d processor, more memory (a no-brainer, really)
- a slightly bigger screen / resolution (x2) (for the original DS games: upscaling 320x240 for the new resolution)
- SD / Micro SD ram slot (for homebrews and for game demos), mini USB-port, bluetooth, TV Out optoin
- improved touchscreen (iPhone?)
- software reset, plus a 'Home' button with an ingame menu (instead of the slightly redundant Start / Select ones)
- accelerometer, gyroscope
software:
- a convenient, new "demo station" with a Virtual Console-like service (downloadable demos for EVERY title, full new and old games, trailers etc. - VC synchronization, message board, news channel, shop channel)
- upgradable firmware (for upcoming features)
- a considerable homebrew support
- web browser, PDA functions, mp3 player, instant messenger, Flash-support
- backwards compatibility (DS, GBA, GB, NES, SNES, GameCube?)
Oh and I like the P-Wii name a lot.
[mis-posted; deleted; sorry]
Wah.....! Oh......
This is more an upgrade, rather than a successor.....
If I was the 'king of the universe', I'd have added motion sensing technology to the new DS, twin touch screens and I'd have made it out of the same rubbery stuff as those super bouncey balls you get from gotcha machines....... (imagine the possibilities...!)
And I'd shall call it ' P-Wii' ......... !
(portable-Wii ....... geddit???)
Heh. Nice. I like PiiWii better, though. ;D
I'm not sure how they could implement twin touch screens because I think it would be easy to break the top screen when a user presses down against it.
What I would like is WPA/WPA2 encryption. Everything else on my network is WPA, so I have to plug in the USB Connector on one of the devices to turn it into a signal the DS can recognize. Terribly inconvenient, but I'm not compromising my security for the DS either.
It does seem, though, that with both MP3 player support and a camera, SD card support will be added.
Although I remember hearing another rumor stating the new DS will not have a GBA slot. If they removed this slot altogether, wouldn't it keep third party devices such as the R4 from playing pirated games? It wouldn't totally close the doors on pirates, but it would keep the "casuals" out.
And while I hope they do add Virtual Console support, for some reason, I highly doubt it, unless they can enable you to link your Wii Shop account to a DS "app store" or whatnot.
Even less than an upgrade... an addition to the line-up. Cause the current Lite model will stay available at current price. So it's more about giving more options to new customers than forcing the old customers to buy the new model... Nintendo is not yet ready for a Nintendo DS successor. Both hardware and software sales stats seem to give it at least 18-24 months before the momentum really declines in a worrying fashion. There are still millions of games that can be sold to the current installed base. No need to rush to the next race for them; they lead this one.
I take it Nikkei Net is credible given how this is spreading across the net. It's not official until Nintendo makes an announcement.
Looks nice, but I doubt it'd have cell phone capabilities, such as the iPhone, unless it utilized Skype, a similar service or perhaps WiFi capabilities. But then it gets all technical and unapproachable to the less technically inclined.
But even then, this came as a surprise.
