Nintendo President Talks DS Successor

Future Nintendo handheld will feature ìhighly detailed graphicsî and motion sensing capabilities, according to Satoru Iwata.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has spoken openly about the features that the successor to the DS will offer.

"[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing," the executive told Japanese newspaper Asahi (translated by Kotaku).

Iwata went on to say that the ongoing success of the DS meant that the company isn’t ready to begin talking about when its successor will hit the market. Yesterday Nintendo said that the DS had set a new calendar year sales record in the US and that the system had become the bestselling console in Europe.

In October last year it was rumoured that Nvidia had been lined up to supply a “Tegra system-on-chip processor” for the successor to the DS. It was also speculated that the new handheld would launch in late 2010, featuring “smarter” graphics and DS backwards compatibility.

The Asahi report also noted that the next Legend Of Zelda title for Wii will be released before the end of 2010 and that the Wii Vitality Sensor should launch shortly after a press conference this July.
