Nintendo has reported strong hardware and software sales in the US marketplace during December.

Although official US sales data for December and all of 2009 will be announced by the NPD Group on January 14, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said today that the company sold around three million Wii units in the US last month.

Nintendo also believes that its DS handheld set a new calendar year US sales record for any console or portable system.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii sales are approaching four million units in the States following its November 15 release, according to the company.

“The millions of people who bought Nintendo hardware during the holidays can look forward to enjoying great games on those systems now and in the future,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing. “The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS, and Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all currently providing Nintendo fans with amazing experiences and fun adventures for the whole family.”

Earlier today Nintendo said that the DS has become the bestselling console in Europe and the Wii the fastest selling console in the continent’s history, according to internal data.
