Nintendo Takes Japanese Charts

DSi doubles sales of nearest competitor, Wii outpaces the PSP to land in second.

Following Nintendo’s landmark NPD sales figures for November, the company also had much to celebrate in its native Japan, where sales of its new DSi soared while the Wii managed to outsell Sony’s PSP.

According to data provided by Media Create, Nintendo’s newish camera-enabled handheld saw its sales climb over 35 percent from last week, with 126,648 units sold at the retailers.

Also for the week ending December 7, Nintendo’s Wii finally managed to move Sony’s PSP out from the second spot. The Wii sold 56,702 units; just some 2,000 units more than Sony’s handheld. Nintendo’s blisteringly successful TV console had threatened to outsell the PSP last week, an achievement it could finally claim this week in part due to the ongoing success of Animal Crossing: City Folk.

Every other nexgen console fell in sales. The PS3 – while still maintaining a healthy 3:1 ratio over the 360 – saw sales fall slightly, down some 4,000 to reach 30,309 units moved. Despite the drop Sony should hardly be complaining about it; the sales performance of the PS3 in recent months has been painful to watch.

Meanwhile, the 360 slips down to 9,988 units; a low number that nevertheless remains way over the annual average. And, as the Nintendo DS scored the UK’s biggest ever weekly sales record, while at the same time setting a new sales record stateside, in Japan it moved a mere 12,096 units; less than half that of last week.
