No DRM For PC Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Publisher confirms that, after an initial login, Brotherhood can be enjoyed offline.

Ubisoft has confirmed that its controversial always-on DRM will not be included in the upcoming PC release of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.

The publisher told VG247: “The PC version of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, after an initial login, will be playable in offline mode.”

The DRM, dubbed the Online Services Network, has been the subject of some controversy since Ubisoft introduced it last year. It requires a constant internet connection, with players kicked out of the game should their connection drop at any time, and unable to even load the game if their PC is offline.

The requirement works both ways, too – last March swathes of players were locked out of playing Ubisoft games such as Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 for a weekend due to a problem with Ubisoft’s own servers.

Early last month Ubisoft confirmed the Online Services Network would in future be applied “on a case-by-case basis” after a player spotted that the DRM had been patched out of some older Ubisoft titles including Assassin’s Creed II and Splinter Cell: Conviction.
