NPD: 2009’s Bestselling Console, PC Games

Activision’s Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the bestselling game of 2009 in North America, according to data released by the NPD Group.

The Infinity Ward developed title – which has surpassed $1 billion in retail sales worldwide in two months and was also the leading seller in the UK last year - has become the fourth bestselling game of all time in the US. According to NPD, three of the top ten games of all time are now Call Of Duty titles.

The Xbox 360 version of the game took top honours on the annual chart, while the PS3 edition placed eighth. Sandwiched between the pair were six first party Nintendo Wii games.

Halo 3: ODST for 360 and Pokemon Platinum for DS rounded off the top ten.

On the PC front, Electronic Arts and Activision titles dominated the annual bestsellers list, taking nine of the top ten spots, six of which went to Sims and World Of Warcraft games.

The Sims 3 topped the chart ahead of World Of Warcraft expansion Wrath Of The Lich King. Activision’s Modern Warfare 2 placed fifth, while EA’s Spore and Dragon Age: Origins charted in eighth and ninth respectively. Sega’s Empire: Total War came tenth.
