NPD: DS, 360 Set Personal Bests

Both systems achieve February records as Nintendo's portable takes the monthly sales crown and MicrosoftĂs home console leapfrogs Wii.

Nintendo’s DS was the bestselling system in the US last month, moving 613,000 units, while Microsoft’s Xbox 360 leapfrogged Wii to take the top home console slot with 422,000 sales.

Both systems achieved monthly personal bests, with Nintendo saying that the “DS family of systems set a new US record for portable video game sales in the month of February”, and Microsoft noting that it enjoyed “the biggest February in Xbox 360 history”.

Wii was third on the hardware chart with 397,900 sales, almost 40,000 units ahead of PS3, while PSP outsold PS2 by 30,000 units.

“Xbox 360 nabbed the top-spot among the three console systems for the first time since September 2007 when Halo 3 was released,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

“PS3 enjoyed a 30 per cent increase over last year, even while retail supply is reported to remain constrained.

"DS sales continue to remain quite strong, even leading up to the launch of the DSi XL later this month on March 28, which will have seven days of sales during our March reporting month."

Frazier added that February hardware sales were down 20 per cent year-on-year to $426.4 million.
