NPD: Nintendo Games Dominate April Sales

First party Wii and DS titles score six of the top ten places on the monthly software chart.

Nintendo’s Wii Fit was April’s bestselling console game in the US, selling 471,000 copies to top the monthly chart.

The title was the first of six first party Nintendo games to make the top ten in a month when software sales declined 23 percent to $510.74 million. Notably, Pokémon Platinum took second place, with Mario Kart Wii and Wii Play following in third and fourth.

The biggest non-Nintendo title was EA’s The Godfather II, the Xbox 360 version charting in fifth place, one spot ahead of March’s bestselling game, Resident Evil 5.

In total, three Wii, DS and Xbox 360 games made the top ten, along with one PS3 title, The Godfather II, in tenth place.

"April would have been a great month to release a big new game because there weren't a lot of high profile new releases,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. “In fact, you can see that the top ten list for the month includes many games we've seen on the list for months, if not years.

"The number of new releases this month is fairly comparable to what was introduced last April, but GTA IV (on both PS3 and the 360) sold nearly one million more units last April than the entire top ten list did this year.

“April 2008 also featured the release of Mario Kart for Wii, which has remained a top-selling game for this past year, and is on this month's top ten list as well. This really illustrates the impact of comparing against a month when there were several new blockbuster titles new to the market."
