Videogame software, hardware and accessories netted US$1.07 billion in the month, compared to US$1.32 billion in October last year. But the analyst projects that the US market is on track to generate full-year revenues of US$20-21 billion, which is only slightly below last year's revenues of US$21.3 billion.

Of the platforms, the 360 generated the greatest proportion of sales at 27 per cent of the total, but it represented only a narrow lead over PS3's second-place 26 per cent. Indeed, PS3's contribution represents an eight per cent jump over its performance in October last year.

With the arrival of Modern Warfare 2 and the other leading titles for the year, such as Super Mario Bros. Wii and Assassin's Creed 2, NPD Group anticipates November sales will be strong. But its analysis of market attitudes suggests that though the American public's opinion of the general economy is generally improving, outlook on personal situation is continuing to degrade.
