The Xbox 360 version of Prototype topped NPD’s monthly software chart for June, during which time it sold 419,000 copies.
Prototype managed “roughly 600,000” sales across Xbox 360 and PS3, said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. “While this is solid performance for new IP, it's a relatively modest sales figure for any game capturing the top spot for the month."
Sales of last month’s bestseller, THQ’s UFC 2009: Undisputed for Xbox 360, more than halved, but the game still managed to grab second place in what was a $625 million month for software revenues. The publisher’s Red Faction: Guerrilla also debuted in eighth place.
EA games took four of the top ten spots, with EA Sports Active placing third and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 entering in fourth place. Fight Night Round 4 took sixth and seventh in its first chart showing.
"Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010 had a great debut at retail, nearly doubling the units sold in the first month at market of the previous best-two launches: PGA Tour '05 and '07, which sold 272K units each in their respective launch months,” said Frazier. “No doubt a combination of moving the release date of the game out of ‘Madden Month’ into June where golf was heavily televised due to the US Open as well as well-received new game features and attributes helped contribute to this success.”
Four Wii, four Xbox 360 titles and two PS3 games made the top ten, but Wii Play failed to do so for the first time in 29 months.
Although it released towards the end of the month, Sega’s Wii exclusive The Conduit didn’t show up in the top ten data. The game made a less than stellar showing in the UK chart recently and we’ve contacted NPD with a request for its US dales data.
"While some of the decline in retail sales could be a migration on the part of consumers to acquiring content via digital distribution, our reports on downloads and subscriptions reveal that it's not yet having enough impact on the console market to be an overly meaningful factor in the retail down-turn,” noted Frazier. “That said, there are increasing avenues for consumers to game, including via mobile devices, and it's clear the industry is sorting through how to manage all these opportunities while deploying resources appropriately."
