All three console manufacturers enjoyed the impact of price cuts last month as the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 recorded major jumps in unit sales over August 2009.

"PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 realised an increase over August of 87 per cent, 33 per cent and 31 per cent respectively, on an average sales per week basis,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier, noting that the September reporting period ran for five weeks (August 30 – October 3) compared to four the previous month.

However, combined hardware revenues declined six per cent to $472.28 million when compared to September 2008, largely due to an eight per cent fall in the average retail price of consoles year-on-year.

"Compared to last September, the PS3 was the big winner, more than doubling last year's sales,” Frazier said. PS3 captured the top spot in home console sales for the first time and outsold Xbox 360 for the first time in 14 months.

Nintendo’s DS remained the top selling platform for the sixth consecutive month, despite being the only system to see a decline compared to August sales.

Wii sales jumped by almost 200,000 units compared to August, and Xbox 360 sales were up nearly 140,000 units.

PSP and PS2 were again at the bottom of the pile, although sales of the Sony systems were up by 50,000 and 40,000 units respectively compared to the previous month.

DS – 524,000
PS3 – 491,000
Wii – 462,000
360 – 352,000
PSP – 190,000
PS2 – 146,000

Yeah true NickgamertagO1

I guess we will have to wait and just keep an eye on the statistics and data. By the way I could not actually reply directly because for some strange reason the reply option/button seems to be disabled...

these PS3 sales are more impressive than most people realize cause MS offered an additional $50 rebate on top of the $100 360 price cut

Congratulations to Sony, but I'm a tad less optimistic than you chaps. It's the first time PS3 has been at the top of the chart, and the first time it has outsold the 360 in over a year.

It's a step in the right direction, but Sony still have a lot of work to do.

May I be the first to congratulate Sony. They have pulled it off; many 'doubters' thought the PS3 was dead in the water post-launch but as the 'statistics' show it is well and truly still fighting. If it keeps this performance up it will catch up with the 360 install base by September 2010. The fight for second spot has indeed begun. Next month will be interesting; Wii price-cut, PS3 Spike fall and also Uncharted Drakes Fortune 2. I look forward to seeing how those changes affect the dynamics of this market. But it was true after-all; a lot of people do want the PS3 and selling near 500k of console sales in a recession in September (for a console that is approaching its third year) is impressive indeed. The PS3 is back.

As I agree congrats to Sony, but let's not get overzelous. It's no surprise the PS3 took the top spot (albeit not by much) because of the redesign and price cut. But my guess and many other's is that after the initial bump sales will go back close to what they were before. In Japan PS3 sales sored after the redesign and quickly fell back down. Sales are still higher than they used to be but don't expect 450k+ for very long. I'm guessing with the holiday months coming up people will still exclaim victory for Sony and their redesign forgetting that every holiday each console manufacturer has a significant bump with no relation to anything other than it being the holiday season. The true test of the PS3's newfound success will be March of 2010 when the shopping and tax return season craze die down.

Also, Sony has over 7 million units to make up to catch the 360 and selling 100k more than the 360 for 12 months (won't happen) will not make up 7 million, more like 1.2 million.

Not trying to crap on Sony's parade (I did congratulate them) but this is hardly a surprise and it could be argued that the PS3 should have sold better in its first month of a hefty price drop, HDD size-increase, console redesign, and apparently a killer app launching right around the same time.

Well think back; what happened when the 40 GB PS3 launched? Initially sales took time to gain traction but by 2008 they were ahead of the 360 when they were behind during the last few months of 2007...what I am saying is there is a good chance that the PS3 will gain traction with the mass crowd because of one; its better price and two its vastly improved advertising. I agree the test in a sense will be March...when GT5 releases across Europe and Japan most likely. And perhaps this is when the Motion Controller will launch. Basically I think Sony know what they are doing.

As for the gap....taking into account Europe, Japan, Asia Sony will 'easily' eat into the 360's hardware installation lead by at least 3 million in the next 6 months (including September) if not 4.5 million and then from on there easily a few million in the run up to September 2010. I think that lead will be vastly cut as more and more people realize in Japan, Europe and the USA that for a little more you are getting a vastly superior piece of hardware. Take out the core cheap 360 and you would have an even greater disparity in sales between the PS3 and 360.

True.

Also true. If worldwide sales are significant for a period of time that could eat into MS' lead, too. I'm curious to see how this holiday plays out and if Sony is able to keep a month to month lead as they did temporarily before MS cut the price originally (in 08 or whenever it was).

Well said. "PS3 is back"

If the PS3 was launched by any other company they would have been doomed. Sony has pulled the PS3 out of the pit and turned it into one of the best consoles. Thanks for listening to your consumers and keep the good exclusives coming as well!

Hear hear! Everybody had written them off but they've come out fighting. Ha ha! The next Dreamcast? Not quite.
