NCsoft’s Aion has debuted atop September’s US PC games retail chart, with the Collector's Edition also taking fifth place in the rankings, according to data provided by the NPD Group.

Previously known as Aion: The Tower Of Eternity, the MMO was released in Korea in November 2008 and in Japan and Taiwan in July 2009. It has enjoyed notable success in Asia, helping to drive strong growth for its South Korea-based publisher in the first and second fiscal quarters. Ahead of its western release, NCsoft said that pre-orders for the title had almost reached 400,000.

Also new to the chart are Atari’s Champions Online in third place - one spot behind August’s bestseller, The Sims 3 – and Square Enix’s Batman: Arkham Asylum at 16.

Impressive showing by Aion. I wasn't terribly impressed in the beta. We'll have to wait and see if it suffers the same fate of Warhammer and Conan (a significant drop in player base after the first free month) or if this one has legs.

On that topic, I think the media's expectations of these games is slightly unfair. I would guess most if not all MMO's suffer from a proportion of players dropping out after the first month. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they are all failures. Certainly I would guess that even on the initial sales Conan and Warhammer were profitable releases, and continue to be so. Unfortunately in the media they have to be continually compared to WOW.
