"Consoles offer a baseline experience, and PC is the best it can be, so I don’t think consoles pose any threat to PC."

"PC vs. console" is an old debate, but Nvidia VP of content business development Roy Taylor says both types of gaming platforms can co-exist in a thriving videogame market.

"...People often pit PCs against consoles. But consoles are not at all bad for the PC gaming market," Taylor stated in an Edge Keynote published Wednesday.

"First of all, the number of people working in the industry and creating videogames because of consoles is at a record high. How could that be bad? And most console owners in the West also own a PC."

He continued, "Consoles offer a baseline experience, and PC is the best it can be, so I don’t think consoles pose any threat to PC. I own a PS3, I own an Xbox 360, I own an Xbox, I own a PS2. I also own three or four PCs. I can’t think of people where it’s a case of 'either or.'"

Taylor, who is also CTO of the PC Gaming Alliance, said that one real threat to Western game companies is Asia, and its experience with the "free-to-play" model.

This week, the PCGA released a study which found that PC gaming generated $10.7 billion worldwide, with Asia accounting for nearly half of that figure.

"The West can close the gap on Asia by introducing more high-quality free-to-play games," he said. "In fact, it has to do that, because if game companies over here don’t do it, then Asian companies will be coming over here and dominating the business. There’s no doubt."

He added, "What happens when an Asian company comes here, produces a "Crysis" and makes it available for free? It's an entirely possible scenario."

More about the PC gaming market can be found in Taylor's keynote.

It is troubling to hear some people literally "hate" a platform, it's ridiculous. What's bad for the PC image is the constant BS "4000 dollar PC needed to run game X" kinda post.

I agree, gamers saying you need £££ to run certain games is a load of nonsense. PC gaming just now is more affordable than ever.

Roy Taylor is correct when he say both PC's and consoles can co-exist. I couldn't imagine playing games like: Left 4 Dead, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, The Witcher, Mass Effect, The Orange Box, Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc on a system other than PC.

Very true. As a PC gamer first, I still own every console and handheld. It is troubling to hear some people literally "hate" a platform, it's ridiculous. What's bad for the PC image is the constant BS "4000 dollar PC needed to run game X" kinda post.
