Resistance: Fall of Man is currently the only Sony published PS3 title to have topped one million sales in the US, according to NPD data.
GameSetWatch reports that just six Sony published PS3 titles have surpassed 500,000 unit sales. LittleBigPlanet is the second highest selling, with sales between 750k and one million copies, while Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue have each shifted 500k-750k.
MotorStorm, Ratchet & Clank: Tools Of Destruction and Heavenly Sword have sold between 250k and 500k, while MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and Hot Shots Golf: Out Of Bound are yet to move 250k units.
The sales figures were correct as of April 2009, and don’t include games sold as part of console bundles.
Calm down fanboys. This is a normal circumstance of poor market penetration. It doesn't mean your console sucks or that the games suck, it just means no one's buying into it for the time being.
Interestingly, whilst GT Prologue sold poorly in the US, it hit 2.2 million in Europe.
Bundled games should be counted in things like this, because people tend to buy consoles for specific games, and the Sony games will tend to be those games.
Gee, I wonder if the fact NPD doesn't count ANY big box stores in the US might skew the results? I wonder...NOT. Come on, people, NPD is not the total count of sales. All that can be said is, 'they might be used a a "guide" to sales' as long as the game isn't something a Wal-mart buyer would buy like...err sports games, music games, movie ip games. Then of course in many states box-stores are the only store within 100 miles for gamers . [That would be 799.998 furlongs for you fine Englishmen.]
So yeah, except for huge selling segments in gaming in half of the United States the NPD count covers everything. [face hand]
God of War will fix that.
I dont really understand why this matters as long as these games do well as a whole if you look at the worldwide sales of these games many of them have sold above 2mill worldwide, which is far from a flop and still continue to sell. From the looks of it this is just another attempt to nitpick and Sony bash.
Well, PS3 first party sales are horrible if you compare them to first party sales of Nintendo and Microsoft. I believe Gears 2 hit 3 million units sold worldwide within a month and Nintendo's titles continue to sell over a longer period of time. If the exclusive titles, reasons why people should choose a PS3 over other consoles struggle to reach even 10% of its installed base, something has gone wrong.
Ouch, only 1 title in the US has sold 1 million copies? Maybe this will be the year of the PS3, or maybe it'll be the year of PS3 software? No? Maybe in 8 years they'll have something good to talk about, forget about now and the last 2 years. 10 years is what really matters. No one cares about now, it's all about 2012, or is it 2013? 2015 now? How bout 2020? ^^
No Nick, it's one Sony published title that's passed 1 million copies. There's nothing there about how multiplatform titles have done on the PS3.
Oh, got it. Thanks.
edit: Wow, it says it right across the top of the story "Sony Published". That's still crummy, but not as bad as only 1 title selling 1 million Sony published or not.
Gamasutra has a few more details regarding third-party sales (GTA4, MGS4, CoD4, CoD:WaW and Assassin's Creed being the only other million sellers) on PS3 and the picture isn't much prettier for Sony. They lag far behind both 360 and Wii in million sellers - whether first party or third party. Attach rates do matter and all evidence points to the majority of PS3's being used primarily as Blu-Ray players and not for games.
I'd be one of that majority who uses their PS3 as a video player rather than a games machine. I trade in my games when I've done with them if they have no worthwile online or offline multiplayer apsect and currently I have 7 Wii games, 8 360 games and just 1 PS3 game in my collection. If a multiformat game comes out I want to buy, I always get the 360 version for 2 reasons, the first being that rubbish PS3 controller which is awful compared to the 360 pad and the other reason is the fact that the 360 is far easier to develop games on than the PS3 and are therefore optimised to run better on the 360 than the PS3. Oh and a third reason, I fucking hate Sony fanboys way back from the PS1 days when I owned the better console, the N64, but it wasn't considered cool by the pill popping dance music morons, so I am loving Sony's fall to also rans in this generation :D
Grognard, could you put a link up to that article? I tried to find it on Gamasutra last night but couldn't. Thanks,
Here's the article, Nick: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24199
You have to read through the text as the numbers are not conveniently pulled out in chart format like it is for the first party section of this article.
Thanks.
In a few months, it will officially be the 5th "Year of the PS3, where we're all supposed to wait for that AAAA title that sells more than any game from the 2600 to now.
Have people forgotten that it's been 4 years! How long are we supposed to be waiting after purchasing the thing. Got my LG Blu-Ray drive in my PC for $92 off new egg a year ago. That's all the PS3 seems to have over the Xbox; so I guess I'm covered.
Are you sure about 4 years Indrema? I thought the PS3 launched in the fall of 2006? Meaning this fall would be 3 years, not 4. If you're referring to this GEN then yes, this fall would be 4 years.
Yeah, you're right....It just felt like 4 years.
The only issue I have with reports that quote total numbers and use NPD data as their source is that they never say that NPD data only covers 60-70% of retail sales and doesn't include Walmart or any online sales.
Didn't know that, thanks!
Yeah, I read this days ago...
I don't know about Stateside, but over here in the UK, Sony have barely advertised their games so I'm not surprised no one's buying them. It makes me laugh how people say no one buys Wii games. Sony are much worse off due the fact their games cost a hell of a lot more to produce.
At least Nintendo's games DO sell. The reason why third parties have a hard time on the Wii is because they just make total shit (in general). Yes, there are a few gems that could've sold better but these days all people tend to buy is shit. I mean, 360 owners are hardly any better. All they buy is CoD. They'll buy other games and then sales for those will dip off but the boring drivel that is CoD still sells. Even worse since it a yearly cash cow game now
But its like PS3 owners don't buy anything. The Gamasutra article did make a good point in that at least Sony have tried to push new IPs rather than sequels, even though its sequels like MGS 4 and GTA 4 that have sold the most. Having said that, Gears of War was a new IP and all the 360 suckers bought tha borken piece of garbage. Maybe cos the Yanks love all that macho bullshit and killing, so it suits them...
Metal Gear 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Resistance:Fall of Man, & Killzone 2 are all in the Top Ten purchased PS3 games worldwide.
I guess everyone loves all that macho bullshit and killing; so it suits us all.
Metal Gear and GTA have developed into rather sophisticated satirical critiques on macho bullshit and killing, I'd say. Although stupid people can still play them stupidly.
I don't think any of the games on the list are stupid.
@ above............... Gears of War was a new IP and all the 360 suckers bought tha borken piece of garbage.
Really ? then again reading through your other posts its clear you havent got a fucking clue about what makes a class shooter.
In the states, Sony so heavily marketed the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player, that most people who own one here aren't even gamers. Which is another huge reason owners don't buy any games.
Is this 2007? That argument is as out dated as the "PS3 haz no gamez" argument.
Then we shouldn't need a report stating PS3 games sales are soft. We should expect it as a matter of course.
Game sales are soft in the US according to NPD who only count 60-70% of high street retailers and who don't count online sales. Are they soft everywhere else?
The fact that NPD tabulates 70% of US sales has the same effect towards all consoles - it's not picking on the PS3. In fact, since most of the remaining 30% comes from Wal-mart the situation is probably even worse for PS3 as it's the most expensive console and Wal-mart skews heavily towards the discount shopper. Also, the NPD are the only reliable metrics available and offer a consistent snap-shot of the consumer market in the US - it is very useful in showing trends/consumer preferences. There's no way to spin this in PS3's favor as facts are facts - it's a distant third in the US and will remain so (both in terms of hardware and software sales). Many retailers have already begun shrinking the Playstation sections of their stores in favor of Wii and 360 (Best Buy being particularly notable).
When compared to the NPD numbers of 360 First Party Published games, the PS3 game sales are very low. I believe Too Human has NPD numbers hovering around 500K, and that's a title many people feel had disappointing sales numbers, 500K seems to be around the median for PS3 first party games.
Even though NPDs only cover a certain percentage of sales, it's still a good measure of how games are doing. As well, I'm fairly certain that 60%-70% of all retailers has a disprotionate amount of the total sales, I'd guess they cover at least 80% of total sales. The NPDs are a metric and compared to metrics in other industries like TV with the Nielsen ratings and music with SoundScan, the breadth of their sampling pool is pretty good.
If there was some way to attain all the US/North American sales, I doubt it would push another game into the Million sales range.
Anyways, this article is basically restating what's been known for a while and been stated over and over, that the PS3 has good exclusives, but none that can sell the hardware (in significant enough numbers) at its current price point. I ended up getting my PS3 on sale for $370, I felt that was a fair price for how much I wanted to play Infamous, and now that I have the hardware, past released games like MGS4, Killzone 2 and Uncharted are games I will pick up eventually, no question. The lacking sales are definitely a symptom of the raw install base and the fact some people who own PS3s, only use its Blu Ray functionality.
The real story is how Sony have been dragging their feet on the price cut and how much it will effect the long term success of the PS3.
I don't know, but the worldwide average puts it in last place; so I don't imagine games sell too well anywhere.
Besides, those games are fun, but there's nothing really memorable.
Well, the worldwide average last place is largely because of it's last place in the US, isn't it? It doesn't lag the 360 by too far in europe (ahead on the continent, behind in the UK), and it's the other way around in japan. So you'd definitely expect it to have better games sales relative to the 360 elsewhere, than it does in the US.
I don't think we need an argument about which games are and aren't memorable.
MGS4 isn't memorable?...
That's not a first-party title.
"Gears of War was a new IP and all the 360 suckers bought tha borken piece of garbage"
It's a bit of the overstatement mate. GOW is a superb fun game for me.
Bit short though.
So is "You have to burn the rope" but the ending music is so worth it.
...and before GameSetWatch, Gamasutra had this up as well.
