Satoru Iwata has given a speech about the Japanese launch of Nintendo’s Wii video service, the Wii-no-Ma Channel, which debuts tomorrow.
The advertising-based service, which will initially be offered in Japan only, is a collaboration between Nintendo, which will handle its development and management, and media firm Dentsu, which will be responsible for sourcing original video content.
Iwata introduced Wii-no-Ma as a means to "keep continuous expansion of [the] gaming population... We believe it is necessary to propose to make those who do not currently neither play videogames nor feel like pouring energies for playing them to keep at least in contact with videogames, along with the deployment of mainstream videogames."
In his speech Iwata confirmed that Nintendo is interested in launching the service outside of Japan in the future.
“Wii-no-Ma service is available only in Japan at the start, but the overseas deployment is under planning in the future,” he said in a video broadcast on Nintendo's Japanese Wii website.
Upon launch users will be able to download the Wii no Ma Channel for free from the Wii Shopping Channel. It will offer both original programming and a space for partner companies serving up promotional videos.
Content will also be downloadable to the DSi for portable viewing.
