Pro Evolution Soccer publisher Konami has suggested to Gamekyo that the Konami ID system, an old and widely detested component of its online-enabled games, will be dropped from PES 2010.

A hangover from earlier Japanese games, Konami ID codes have remained a requirement of several key titles despite the arrivals of Xbox Live and PSN. In Metal Gear Online, for instance, a separate login and sign-up process must be endured before you’re allowed to play, resulting in a total of three user profiles: one for PSN, another for Konami’s online community, and a third for the game itself.

Faced with stiff competition from a rejuvenated FIFA, however, Konami is rebuilding multiplayer in PES from the ground up, promising a complete overhaul of several important aspects. One of these is network code, the publisher determined to rid the game of persistent lag issues. Another is the removal of the Konami ID, the online game to be managed solely by platform-holders’ servers.

The story says nothing about future games like Metal Gear Rising, though the days of this particular Konami code seem numbered.
