Planet Moon CEO Joins Playfish

Aaron Loeb, former CEO of Planet Moon Studios, has joined the EA-owned social game studio Playfish as general manager.

Inside Social Games reports that Loeb’s new remit will mean overseeing production of Playfish’s portfolio of original games and titles based on EA’s established console franchises.

His departure prompts fresh speculation about the future of Planet Moon Studios. In January we reported that 37 of the studio’s development staff had transferred to browser-based MMOG developer Bigpoint Games, a move that Loeb explained was vital to ensure Planet Moon could continue to operate.

Loeb said that Planet Moon was hard at work on a project last December, only for it to go into financial default unexpectedly. That was caused, Loeb said, by “a substantial amount of money” Planet Moon was owed by several unspecified parties, believed to be the studio’s financial backers.

At Playfish, Loeb should be on much safer ground. While the firm continues to lag some way behind its rivals on Facebook and elsewhere EA, which purchased Playfish in 2009 for $400 million, is committed to building its social gaming presence.
