PlayStation Minis Pass One Million Downloads

Bite-sized PSP and PS3 titles reach sales milestone following October 2009 launch.

Sony has announced that its PlayStation Minis range has cleared one million downloads across PAL, Asian and US territories.

Bite-sized downloadable PlayStation Network titles that launched for PSP last October and for PS3 before Christmas, Minis were first announced at E3 last year.

The platform holder said that more than 85 Minis are now available from over 50 developers, and that a host of upcoming releases will ensure that players have “more choice than ever in the coming months”.

"We’re always looking for exciting and unique content to offer our audiences and Minis offer exactly that,” said Zeno Colaço, VP of publisher and developer relations at SCEE. “Minis offers a huge variety of snackable gaming experiences, be it games from smaller developers, with small budgets to more established developers, with established IPs that are easily accessible and great value for money. We’re proud to have achieved over a million downloads in less than a year and with new developers coming on board every day, bringing with them incredibly fun and creative games, we look forward to establishing Minis as a fans favourite amongst the PlayStation community.”

While the million download milestone is not an insignificant one, Sony acknowledged in May that there's still work to be done if the Minis project is to be deemed a success.

“I think it's gone okay,” SCEA’s senior VP of publisher relations, Rob Dyer, said at the time. “My concern with Minis always has been if you have a PSP or a PS3, do you want to play small bite-sized games like that? I think the jury's still out. I think in some instances they do, and some instances they don't.”
