PopCap announces Sony Ericsson agreement

PopCap has announced a global agreement with Sony Ericsson that will see its games pre-loaded on the Xperia mini range of smartphones and "officially mark the arrival of PopCap’s game titles on Android devices in Europe."

Under the deal, the full version of PopCap's Chuzzle will be available on Sony Ericsson's Xperia phones out of the box. Trial versions of the likes of Plants Vs Zombies and Peggle will be pre-loaded, with users able to buy full versions using a built-in billing service.

In a recent feature, PopCap's senior game designer David Bishop told us the firm had struggled bringing its games to smartphones running Google's operating system, saying: "Though Android is one of three strategic mobile markets for PopCap, it's been a challenge because of the breadth and variance of devices."

Partnering with Sony Ericsson has simplified that process greatly, with the PopCap's senior director of global product and business strategy for mobile and Edge Online columnist Giordano Contestabile explaining: "PopCap is committed to providing best-in-class game experiences for Android game players. The Sony Ericsson Xperia mini devices are equipped with superior processing power and exceptional screen resolution, which provides an excellent platform for the quality fun that our fans have come to expect."

EA announced its intent to acquire PopCap last week for an initial $750 million, a figure that could rise to $1.3 billion if earnings targets are met.
